Wow, it’s already July! The Shop My Stash series has officially reached the six month mark and I’m still going strong! I’m cycling through more of my makeup than I ever have before and I’m finding that this is helping me curb my spending. I haven’t bought a whole lot since I started this endeavour!
Which leads me to this question: I have been getting a few questions from readers asking me for tips on what helps you stay on track when you are on a no-buy or a low-buy (which is what I am following, more or less). Is there any interest in a blog post with tips and ideas that might help others who are trying to stay on track for their no-buy, low buy, project pans or shop my stash attempts? Let me know! 🙂
Anyways, let’s get started as there is a lot to cover!
For those of you who are new to this series, every month in 2017. I will be selecting (or ‘shopping’) different items from my makeup collection (aka the ‘Stash’) in an attempt to rediscover and use up what I already own instead of going to the store or shopping online. When your collection gets out of hand, you tend to forget what you already have.
If you want to read up more about this series, please see my introductory post. It contains a pretty thorough explanation as to what this is all about. 🙂 Also you can check out all my other Shop My Stash posts here.
I break down my recap posts into three parts: empties, keepers and rejects. Starting in May and June, I have also added a new category called “retired” which I will explain in that section. I think having this new category is a very good thing! Under each category, there is a quick write up about each product to express my thoughts about each one. I like to start off with success so lets look at the empties first. Quick wins! 🙂
During the last recap, it felt like the empties were going to be few and far between… because, honestly, how much can you use up in one month??? So when I ended up with three empties this time around, I was ecstatic! Am I the only one who gets excited when you hit pan or realize you have an empty? I think it’s exciting! (Plus it means one less product in the collection – huzzah!) Let’s take a look at the empties this go-round.
Face Primer: CoverFX Anti-Aging Primer
This primer goes on smooth and is not at all sticky. I really like this primer! Which is a good thing because you’ll probably see this one here again in a few months… I have a full sized tube! 😮 I have used up another deluxe sized sample before this one so I knew what I was getting into so that’s okay.
Brow: ColourPop Brow Pencil in Bangin’ Brunette
I had a love-hate relationship with this brow pencil. On one hand, Bangin’ Brunette is the perfect shade for m brows so that they look natural and I really like the formulation and staying power of this pencil. On the other hand, I was not a big fan of it always breaking on me! To be fair, I have another shade of this product and that one doesn’t seem to have this issue so I’m just gonna chalk this one up to having a faulty product. Oh well. I must have liked it, though, seeing as I used it until it was done!. I would repurchase this as long as it doesn’t keep breaking.
Eye Primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer
This isn’t empty but I’ve been using it since November so it’s time to let it go. This was a pretty great product for this price point but I think I will stick to my fave Dior product when it comes to lash primers.
This is the largest grouping of products. These are the ones that I like enough or love enough to keep and continue using. 🙂
Concealer: tarte Shape Tape in Medium
Amazing coverage! But it’s also a little bit on the thicker side when it comes to consistency. That being said, I still love it! The shade Medium is a perfect match for my skin tone. This concealer provides great coverage and blends so easily. Love this.
Foundation / BB Cream: Chanel Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup SPF 15 in 30 Cendre – Shell
Probably my only super high end foundation. I like this one a lot! It is a great shade match and super easy to blend. It also feels very lightweight and pretty moisturizing. I also liek that it contains SPF too. I won’t be wasting this one… I like it too much!
Foundation / BB Cream: L’Oreal Infallable Pro-Matte Foundation in 105 Natural Beige
Not pictured here because… well, I can’t seem to find it. I know that I took it on a few camping trips in the last month and I know I have seen it around but I seem to have misplaced it. Either way, it is one of my fave drugstore foundations! It has great coverage that builds and it does what it advertises and gives me a matte finish. I’ve used more than half of this already… now if only I could find it!
Blush: Benefit Sugarbomb Shimmer Blush
I will admit, I forgot I owned this. I’m so glad I rediscovered it! It really is such a great blush! There are four colours that you can use individually or blend together with a swirl of your blush brush. I usually just swirl them all and then apply it to the apples of my cheeks. This is a keeper for sure!
Highlighter: NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Gleam
I love this highlighter but it sure can be messy! The tube keeps squeezing more and more highlighter out of it without me even touching it so it can get quite excessive. All I can say is that it’s a good thing that this is a great highlight shade because otherwise I would have tossed it! Not a fan of the packaging at all!
Setting Powder: CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Matte Finishing Powder in Light to Medium
Still loving this powder. It just sets everything. And it is also tinted and provides me with a bit of colour. There isn’t anything bad I can think of about this product… except maybe the mirror int he compact. It’s really small. But that can be forgiven because the product is fab.
Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper
Holy grail. Enough said. But in all honesty, I love this eyeliner to bits! I’m sure this is the third pen I’m on now. Sadly it’s getting pretty close to becoming another empty. I just love how precise this is and doesn’t drag on my lashline. It’s just so good.
Eyeliner: essence Eyeliner Pen Extra Longlasting
I’m really liking this liquid eyeliner, as well! This is a great drugstore option. The tip of this liquid eyeliner is precise and I find that it’s a long lasting formula. I will keep this one around for when my KVD one runs out!
Eye Primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer
Another favourite of mine. This is a great eye primer in that my eyeshadow stays put ALL day long. It’s easy to apply with your finger and absorbs quickly so you don’t have to wait to apply your eyeshadow. Just a great product all around!
Mascara: Benefit Roller Lash, tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes
I’m just going to group these two together because I am going to say the same thing about both of them. I’m a huge fan of both the Roller Lash and the Lights, Camera, Flashes mascaras! They both make my lashes look longer, keeps the curl and just overall looking great. This is why I haven’t tossed them out yet after using them for months now! I’m usually not very shy to throw out a deluxe sample if it’s horrible so that’s a good thing.
Setting Spray: MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Spray
Love this setting spray. It’s so light and smells nice. And most importantly, it keeps my makeup on my face. 😉 It’s also very refreshing to use throughout the day. Good stuff!
Eye shadow (palette or singles): Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist’s Palette
I had an awful first impression of this palette when I first got it. I got it because I love purples so this was the perfect palette for me! But when I first used it, I didn’t find it as pigmented as I would have liked… so I set it aside and didn’t use it for awhile. Giving it another chance this past month, I don’t know what was going on back then because the pigmentation is great now! And I love the many shades of purple in that palette. I used it a lot last month and I will be using it a lot in the future, too.
I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not but I only have one item for this category and quite honestly, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to include it here under The Rejects or put in in with The Empties. Anyways, here goes. Please don’t hate me!
Eye Shadow (Palette or Singles): Urban Decay Naked 2
This was one of my very first palettes I ever purchased for myself. I loved it. Absolutely adored it. But now that it’s old, I think it’s dried up. It’s not as pigmented as it used to be when I use a brush (it’s still very pigmented if I use my fingers) and quite honestly, I have most (if not all) of these shades (or similar shades) in other palettes that I own. I also noticed that I never reach for this palette anymore… I reach for other palettes instead. So because of those reasons, I think it’s time to part with this. Sad to say but goodbye Naked 2. You were lovely while you lasted! No, I will not be repurchasing this due to the reason stated above of my other similar nude shade palettes.
As you may have noticed, I started having items mentioned each and every month. I don’t want to continue cluttering my recap posts by having to write about these same items over and over so I started a new classification: The Retired. These are the last of their kind in my collection. These are the products that I will continue to use month after month so the product in this category will never change. To be perfectly honest, I want all the product categories to get to this point but I know that it’s not realistic. Anyways, so far, we have two retired categories.
Pore Reducer: Benefit POREfessional
While I have many deluxe sided samples of this product, this is the only pore reducer I have in my collection. If you have been following me for awhile now, you know this is my holy grail pore product in my makeup arsenal! I consider this as a Holy Grail product and I will continue to use this product and finish up all the samples that I have.
Brow Gel: MAC Brow Set in Clear
Another Holy Grail product of mine… and the only brow gel that I currently own. This does a fab job keeping my brows staying put! I will finish this and either keep buying it or I will buy another product… but only one product at a time… so I won’t have to include it in my Shop My Stash endeavours. Yes, I have learned through this process and I will try my best not to hoard products anymore.
And that, my friends, is it for my May and June Shop My Stash recap! I hope you enjoyed that. I’m six months into Shop My Stash right now and I’m really enjoying it. I’m also finding all sorts of positive things coming out of it that it makes me want to continue doing it.
Are you currently working on a Shop My Stash or Project Pan? How are you doing at the mid-year mark?
