Shop My Stash: January & February 2017

shop my stash january february 2017

A new year means a new blog series!

Last year I tried a Project Pan and for the most part it was very successful! Except for when it came to the makeup products. I got very bored of using the same three products so eventually I just stopped using them. So to help curb that boredom, I am trying something new this year: a monthly Shop My Stash!

What is a Shop My Stash?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Every month, I will be going into my makeup collection and – you guessed it – I will shop my stash. πŸ™‚ Just think of it as a haul post but instead of makeup I bought at Sephora or at Shoppers Drug Mart, it’s a haul straight from my own collection! And I’m hoping that by doing this monthly, I won’t get bored of the products I chose like I did in last year’s Project Pan.

Why Shop My Stash?

The reason why I wanted to start doing this is the following:

  1. My collection is too big and I need to start using more things up! More empties and more pans hit will be a glorious thing. I don’t know about you but I always feel accomplished when I hit pan or finish something.
  2. Knowing what I own. I don’t know about you but there have been times where I have forgotten that I owned something! I would like to get to know my collection and avoid buying duplicates of things.
  3. Rediscovery. Related to number 2. I know I own many products that I once loved but forgotten about. I would like to make those rediscoveries of old faves!
  4. Helps with the “no buy” attempts. I am hoping that by going through my existing stash and rediscovering products I already own will help curb my urges to go shopping. I don’t really need anything at this point so I would like to avoid spending money when I don’t have to!
  5. To save money. See point 4. Saving money is always a good thing!

How Shop My Stash Works

Every month I will take one or two of these types of products and put them in a basket.

  • Face primer
  • Color correction
  • Concealer
  • Foundation / BB Cream
  • Blush
  • Highlighter
  • Bronzer
  • Setting powder
  • Pore reducer
  • Eye primer
  • Eye shadow (palette or singles)
  • Eyeliner
  • Brow
  • Brow setting gel
  • Mascara primer
  • Mascara
  • Setting Spray

If you haven’t noticed, I did not include any lip products (lipstick, lipgloss, etc.) to my list. This is because they are already in rotation in my purse. I change them around a lot so I didn’t think they needed special attention like the rest of these products!

At the end of each month I will have to make a few decisions: keep the product, continue using it (for those holy grail products I must always use) or get rid of it. I’m hoping that by doing this I can help identify my loves and get rid of what I don’t want anymore. I hope that I can get my collection under control.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I am not going to be limited to only using what’s in my basket. If there’s something I want to use then by all means, I will! The basket is just there to help give me something to focus on that month.

Then at the end of the month, I will summarize my monthly basket (what I loved, what I didn’t love, etc.) and then I will pick out a new basket of products!

Shop My Stash for January & February 2017

So let’s get started! Here is the lineup for January and February. The reasoning behind having the same basket for two months is because I spent most of January just trying to figure out how I wanted this to work. By carrying it over into February, it gives me a chance to really try everything in my basket. After February, the baskets will be monthly. Here’s the lineup for the first installment!

I hope this will help me use up my products and I would be happy to come out with a couple of empties! Not quite a “Project Pan” per se but still an attempt to use up what I have!

Check back in a month to see how it went and to see a new basket of products. πŸ™‚

Unboxing + Review: ipsy January 2017 metropolis

ipsy january 2017

How did time fly by so quickly? It’s already February! Alright, it’s time for all my January unboxings! Let’s begin with ipsy. I’m still subscribing to ipsy so here’s to a new year of fab surprises from my glam bag subscription!

January’s glam bag theme was Metropolis. As they say, it is “everything you need to own the concrete jungle” and features a bag that represents this perfectly with greys and silvers! While this is not my fave bag I’ve seen from ipsy, it’s still nice and if you love silver, this is perfect for you!

ipsy january 2017

The contents really made January’s glam bag great for me, though. Let’s take  a look at what I received!

ipsy january 2017

The first item I received was a sample of the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination Anti-Aging Concealer in Medium ($4.50 USD, 1.5 ml). While I do find it really thick, the regular Bye Bye Under Eye does a fantastic job with my undereye circles so I was really looking forward to trying this one out. Similar to the original, this one is thick, in consistency, as well. You don’t need to apply very much of it in order to build up great coverage…. in fact, if you put on too much, I find that it really accentuates fine lines AND it takes forever to blend so be sure to only use a little bit. I did find it to brighten my under eye area, as well so I was pretty happy with this product. And since you don’t need very much each time, this tiny tube will still last me quite awhile! Very pleased with this.

So next we have the pur~lisse Blue Lotus Seed 5-in-1 Mud Mask + Exfoliant ($11.14 USD, 15 ml). I haven’t tried this one yet. I have a couple of deluxe sized masks that are open that I’d like to finish first before I open up a new one. This one is a 10 minute facial that is said to be a “miracle multi-tasker (that) instantly brightens, detoxifies, tightens and soothes skin while providing gentle exfoliation”. Those are all pretty great things to look for in a mask and since I personally love masks, I will definitely be trying this one out sooner than later.

This next one was the big surprise winner in my bag – the Temptu Base Smooth and Matte Primer ($8.75 USD, 7.5 ml). I honestly didn’t think that I would be as impressed as I was with this primer! I have had very limited experience with this brand so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I received this plain Jane, white squeeze tube but I tried it and I’m very happy with it! It made my skin super smooth! The consistency is very light and it sets quickly. My makeup looks great overtop this. The only downside I could see was the size of the bottle – I wish it were bigger! And to think I almost overlooked this one because of it’s simplicity.

ipsy january 2017

Now on to a couple of colour products. I received the Trust Fund Beauty Lip Gloss in Method to the Madness ($22.00 USD, 4 ml). This lip gloss is a nude rose shade that is so great for every day wear. This looks pretty sheer on my lips. I can definitely see myself wearing this alone or on top of a lipstick to give it a bit of a shine. It feels moisturizing on my lips and I don’t find it stick at all. Overall, I really like this gloss!

Last but not least, I received the Paradise Pearlized Blush from Manna Kadar Beauty ($19.00 USD, 3 g). This shade is so beautiful and is described as a “vivid cherry blossom pink”. Looking at the Manna Kadar site, it looks like it was a blush from their Day Dream Palette that was released as an individual blush. It must have been pretty popular then! It’s very pigmented and a bit shimmery but I’m totally okay with that! I also love that this product is paraben free and it’s from a cruelty free brand. So much to love!

ipsy january 2017

So this brings me to the end of my unboxing. The value of the contents in January’s bag is $65.39 USD (which would make it  $85.18 CAD based on today’s exchange rate) so this is indeed a higher value bag. I will be using everything I received so I’m very happy with it!

BUT WAIT! There’s more!

I redeemed a lot of points last month! I received three products from ipsy points:

  • Farsali Rose Gold Elixir Radiating Moisturizer ($11.67 USD, 5 ml): I have heard many great things about this moisturizer! I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, though. Ideal for daytime use for all skin types, this moisturizer contains 24k gold flakes. Super intriguing! They even have a tip on their site as to how to use this with your foundation which I will try because I have been using the tarte Maracuja Oil this way and I have been loving it! I wonder how this one compares?
  • Luxie 227 Blending Brush ($15.70 USD): I love Luxie brushes and I can never get enough blending brushes, to be honest. I had to get this one too!
  • Lisa Hoffman Matte Gold Fragrance Necklace with Tuscan Fig Fragrance Beads ($100 – $200 USD, estimated): I don’t see this particular necklace on the Lisa Hoffman website but all her fragrance necklaces are upwards of $100.00 USD up to over a grand! I don’t know where this one stacks up but I’ve seen these necklaces before and always wondered about them so I wanted to try it out. I really like the scent of the Tuscan Fig beads and this necklace is so pretty! You can wear it with pretty much everything. I’m glad I took a chance on this one!

You get a mix of skincare, makeup and haircare deluxe and full sized products. And you get a different style of bag each month. Unboxing + Review: FabFitFun Winter 2016

fabfitfun winter 2016

I always get excited when I receive a new FabFitFun box! It is so different than the other boxes I subscribe to. Not only do you get beauty items like skin care and makeup… you also get other goodies, as well.

For those of you who are not familiar with FabFitFun, it is a seasonal lifestyle subscription box based in the US. You will receive four boxes a year. The box costs $49.99 USD and it is an additional $8 USD to ship to Canada. It is a pricier subscription but it is seasonal and you only get four of them per year and each box has a value that is well over $200.00 USD so if you see that the spoilers are items you would like, it’s totally worth it! If you would like to try this subscription out, I would very much appreciate it if you use my referral link here.

The FabFitFun Winter 2016 Box contained seven items that will help you through the winter and will also get you ready to tackle the new year.

fabfitfun winter 2016

fabfitfun winter 2016

Let’s take a look at the beauty items first.

The makeup item that was included in the Winter Box was the Butter London IconoClast Mega Volume Lacquer Mascara ($20.00 USD, 2.6 ml). If I didn’t already have a couple of mascaras opened right now, I would love to try this! They claim that this mascara increases the volume of your lashes by 300%! As someone with not that noticeable, straight lashes, I am very intrigued by this mascara! I also love the fact that this product is full sized. This one will be something to try out in the future.

fabfitfun winter 2016

Next up is skincare. I received the O.R.G. Skincare Mineral Peel Face ($44.00 USD, 59 ml). This face peel claims to give you “smoother, softer, more radiant” skin. Who wouldn’t want that? It seems easy enough to use – just spray it on your face, massage it off and done! This sounds like an awesome peel! I’m hoping it’s a gentle one.

fabfitfun winter 2016

The last of the beauty products is in the form of a body cream. There were two scents available and I received the Anderson Lilley Beach Butter Body Cream ($24.00 USD, 148 ml) in Sicilian Tangerine (the other scent was Manhattan Beach). I don’t know about you but my skin gets pretty parched during these dry Alberta winters. I always use a body lotion or body butter after I shower so this will certainly come in handy! Plus, it smells great, too. Love this!

fabfitfun winter 2016

Now that we covered all things beauty, how about we take a look at something that is pretty?

The Gorjana Taner Toggle Lariat Necklace in Gold ($75.00 USD) looks so delicate! I love this necklace. I’m glad that I received a gold necklace (the other option would have been the silver one) because I have been adding a lot more of this colour to my accessories as of late. I have worn this a lot since I received it. It is so versatile and goes with pretty much everything I own. Maybe not my active gear, but certainly what I wear to the office and my casual clothes, too. It’s pretty fantastic and so beautiful.

fabfitfun winter 2016

Now how about some home goods? FabFit Fub is so great at including items you can incorporate into your home and the Winter Box is no different! The D.L. Co Candle in Bergamot Woods ($45.00 USD)  is lovely and decorative. Bergamot Woods comes in silver (the other option was Blackberry Nectar which comes in a gold candle holder) and it is a gorgeous looking candle… though, it is smaller than I thought it would be when I saw the spoiler. In all honesty, I think I would have preferred the Blackberry Nectar one but I will still give this a try.

fabfitfun winter 2016

Can I just say that I love stationery? The Marie Mae Company Thank You Card Set ($24.00 USD, includes 10 cards and 10 envelopes) is so pretty! You never know when you need to send a thank you note so these are great to keep on hand for those moments. Written notes are so rare nowadays so it was great to see something like this included in the box.

fabfitfun winter 2016

fabfitfun winter 2016

The last item in my Winter Box was a 2017 Weekly Planner by Moleskin ($20.95 USD). This one looks to be made specifically for FabFitFun but Moleskin does make many different planners and notebooks. I love planners so I thought this was awesome! This will definitely keep me on track in 2017. And there are stickers! I love stickers. I received the forest green colour (I believe it also comes in a purple?) and it is the perfect size to fit in the bag I usually take with me to work. I know I can use my phone’s calendar to keep track of things – and to an extent, I do – but when it comes to formally using a planner, I’m still very much old school.

fabfitfun winter 2016

fabfitfun winter 2016

fabfitfun winter 2016

fabfitfun winter 2016

So there you have it! All the contents of my Winter 2016 FabFitFun box.

The total retail value of everything was $253.95 USD which equates to $332.20 CAD in using today’s exchange rate. Not too shabby. I wish there were more products but I guess there were just more high value items this time around. Overall, this is still well worth it for a seasonal box!

What did you think of the Winter 2016 FabFitFun box?

ipsy august 2016

Disclaimer: I purchased this subscription box with my own money. All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone. There are referral links in this post.

Blogging Spaces: Designing Your Dream Office

It’s a new year! I don’t know about you but it gets me thinking about what changes I can make in my life. Most of the time these changes involve a personal decision – the most common being of the “trying to be more active and eating healthier” type of goals – however sometimes it can involve other aspects of my life. Like changes when it comes to home decor.

We don’t redecorate very often… if at all, really. But something that has really been neglected in our home is our home office. It seems to have become a bit of a catch all. We don’t nearly spend as much time there as we used to when we played more video games. For a time, we didn’t really have a use for a home office but now that I’ve started blogging more, I wouldn’t mind a nicer space to do that.

When wayfair.ca approached me about the idea of writing a post and sharing what my Blogging Battle Station looks like, I just wasn’t ready to share that. However, that being said, it gave me motivation to at least start thinking about what I would do to that space if I were to turn it into my “dream office”. Turning it into my dream office would not happen overnight. I knew that. But at least this gives me a bit of a nudge to start letting my creative juices flow and start gathering ideas about it.

Wayfair.ca gives you a super easy way to keep track of your ideas with their concept of Idea Boards. Similar to how Pinterest works in that you would “pin” websites to your Pin Boards, users can create Idea Boards and add products to it while browsing the site. So if you see something that you might be interested in and would like to go back and take a closer look in the future, you can use this feature to make that easier. Plus, by seeing all the piece altogether on your Idea Board, it gives you an idea as to whether or not the different pieces go together. Perhaps that turquoise office chair clashes with the orange rug you fell in love with. You can see what works (or in this case, may not work) right away because you can see the products next to each other on your Idea Board. For example, here’s the one I started for my Dream Office.

Let’s take a look at each item that’s on my Idea Board.

So when I first started browsing the site, I wanted to start with the focal pieces that would make up my dream office first. Like a desk. I found this Computer Desk by Monarch Specialties Inc. that was a simple yet modern design but had the functionality of drawers which are handy if you want to file some papers or keep some spare stationery in. I also really liked the grey-silver taupe colour of the desk. This would be perfect to just put my laptop on it and blog away! Plus it seems like a good size for our office space.

Customer Image Zoomed

Now that I have chosen a desk, naturally you would need an office chair. Seeing as the desk is a more neutral colour, I chose something that will add a pop of colour! This purple Alves Mid-Back Mesh Desk Chair fit the bill! Looks comfortable and ergonomic so it’s perfect!

Customer Image Zoomed

Desk. Check. Chair. Check. What’s next? How about a few things that will add personality to your office space? There looks like there is plenty of real estate on the desk that you could add a few things to it. One things that caught my eye is this Simple Structure Pencil Cup in mint.  I have a huge love for stationery so I need a pencil cup, for sure. Maybe even two? This one is fun because it does double-duty – it looks good as decoration BUT it also provides function. This Kikkerland Grass Pen Stand is pretty awesome. It looks nice and decorative by itself but if you need a spot to put a pen or two, this works for that too.  Just put your pens in the grass.

Lighting is also very important in a home office. You need to be able to have enough light to accomplish what you are working on. In my case, I really gravitated towards this Adesso Holbrook 26″ Table Lamp. The mid-century desing looks lovely and it has a swing arm so you can control where you want more light to shine on your workspace. And honestly, the rose gold accents just makes it look fantastic! It’s not just your boring black swing arm lamp, that’s for sure!

Adesso Holbrook 26" Table LampLark Manor 6.25" Mantel Clock

Do you ever lose track of time when you are work on something? Sometimes I get really focused and before I know it, time just flies! At least this Desktop Mantle Clock by Lark Manor might help. And I love how rustic it looks! It would give my workspace a lot of personality!

To really personalize my desk space, I’ve chosen a mug that screams “Olivia”! If you are not aware of my handle on Instagram, it’s pixelhearts so how in love was I when I saw this Morph Pixel Heart Mug from Kikkerland! I do like to enjoy coffee or tea while I am blogging so this was absolutely perfect! PERFECT! And how fun is it that the heart goes from empty to full when you fill the cup with a hot liquid?

Customer Image Zoomed

Last but not least, I thought a nice area rug would pretty much pull everything together. How about this one? Mercury Row’s Psyche Sky Area Rug is cozy and inviting and the aqua matches a lot of what I have chosen and would look great with the grey taupe desk!  Plus, it’s a shag rug so it’ll feel comfy with bare feet. πŸ™‚

Customer Image Zoomed

I think I have a good start on planning a new dream office. I’m sure it will change a number of times but so far it is looking good! Perhaps one day, my dream will come true!

What does your workspace look like? What would you recommend I add to my “dream office”? Share your ideas in the comments below! πŸ™‚

Beauty Empties 3

Beauty Empties - what I loved and what I didn't

My quest to use up products continues! Since empties posts are pretty popular with my readers, today I bring you with 15 empties that I used up in the last couple of months. It is a whole mish mash of hair care, body care and makeup. Since there’s a ton to go through, let us begin!

beauty empties

The Empties

Product: Dove Nutritive solutions Daily Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: I do adore Dove products and that includes their shampoo and conditioners. If I can recall correctly, I received the full-size of both the Daily Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner from ChickAdvisor’s Product Review Club sometime last year. I only have the conditioner pictured here because I am pretty sure I threw away the empty shampoo bottle a long time ago (whoops!). Then I bought the smaller travel sizes for when I went to Hawaii in November. I found that the Daily Moisture line was great for every day use. I tend to have drier ends and this line helped a lot. My hair felt clean with no residue using these products and it made my hair smell great! I wouldn’t hesitate to use these products again in the future.

Product: eva nyc Therapy Session Hair Mask
Rating (out of 5): 4
Repurchase?: Already have… but may not repurchase after. Depends.
Thoughts: I received this from an ipsy glam bag a long, long time ago. It took me this long to finish it because I was saving it and I was afraid of running out! Until I decided to use it up before it went bad. I really liked this hair mask. It smelled really good an d does a great job of moisturizing my hair. I found a large tub of this at Winners so I have repurchased it… however, I have since found other hair masks that I like more right now so I haven’t used it in awhile. Still a pretty great hair mask, nonetheless. But yes, if you are interested in more eva nyc products, check out your local Winners and Marshalls. It seems to be the only place I can find it around Edmonton.

Product: The Body Shop Shea Body Butter
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: I used to have a love-hate relationship with The Body Shop Body Butters. For the longest time, they were just too thick for me! However, this winter has been really, really dry so I needed something that was a bit more intense than my usual body lotion. Enter this Shea Body Butter. I received this deluxe travel sized tub from my Body Shop advent calendar a couple years back and found it in my stash and it wasn’t spoiled yet. I tried it and I was hooked! It’s super moisturizing which is exactly what my skin needs right now. The shea one smells really nice, as well… it’s not overpowering at all. I was really happy with this and now I’m using their Coconut Body Butter. πŸ™‚

Product: Philosophy Raspberry Sorbet Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath
Rating (out of 5):
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: Quite honestly, I love raspberry anything. I received this three pack of classic Philosophy body washes about a year go and I am working my way through them. I had already finished one earlier this year in the scent Melon Daquiri – where the bottle ended up is beyond me… I probably threw it away – and just finished this Raspberry Sorbet one. While this is marketed as a “3-in-1” product, I only used this as a shower gel and I did very much like it. It smells so great, lathers really well and doesn’t completely dry my skin when I use it. The 180 ml bottle lasted me about a month to a month and a half. I’m sure they also sell this scent in the really large bottles that you can find at Shoppers Drug Mart or Sephora. In the end, this one was a win.

Product: Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes, yes, a hundred times yes!
Thoughts: My favourite facial wipes ever. I honestly don’t know how many of these I have finished up already. This was a travel sized pack that I brought with me to Hawaii. It’s gentle on my skin and super effective in wiping off my makeup. Great for lazy days, before a workout or as a first step to my nighttime routine. This is something I always keep on hand!

Product: Delon+ Premium Cosmetic Cotton Rounds (100 count)
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: I am not sure how many 100 count packages I have used up of this product. I think this was my seventh one.. You can get these at Costco for about $12 for I believe it’s eight packages of 100 and I have one package left and it’s been over a year since I bought it. Excellent for pretty much anything you need a cotton round for – removing eye makeup, applying toner, taking off nail polish – you name it! It’s lint free and stays in tact when you use it. This is a pretty standard product that I keep on my vanity table.

Product: Chantecaille Flower Infused Cleansing Milk
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: I received this sample awhile ago and just decided to use it not too long ago. This little 8 ml sample lasted me a couple of weeks. I had not tried a cleansing milk before so it took some getting used to as it does not foam as much as some of my other cleansers… but at the end of the day, my face felt clean and it didn’t dry out my skin so I’m happy with it. I ended up loving this! Too bad it’s so expensive to purchase. Maybe I will get it again one day if I decide to treat myself!

Product: Shiseido The Skincare Extra Gentle Cleansing Foam
Rating (out of 5): 2
Repurchase?: No
Thoughts: This product may be discontinued. I tried to look for it on the Shiseido site but couldn’t find it. I’m not sure if this product smelled the way it did because it was old or if it was just the way it was but I did not like it. I did at first but the smell turned me off of it. It does do a good job of cleansing but I couldn’t get over the smell so I stopped using it. A big nope for me.

beauty empties

Product: Clarins Mission Perfection Serum
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: I am obsessed with this stuff! So I’m super happy that my hubby bought me a new one for Christmas. πŸ˜‰ This is meant to correct dark spots and even out skin tone… and it does a pretty good job of that! I had some dark spots from past blemishes on my cheek and it definitely lightened up my skin and made it brighter. This lasted a good part of the year when I used it once a day in the morning. Smells great and easy to apply on your skin. I really loved it.

Product: Avene Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: This was a pretty small sample. 5 ml lasted me about a week… maybe a week and a half. It’s a very nice gentle serum that made my skin feel much more hydrated and soft. It has a light, soft scent that I really liked. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase this one again. I’m happy it’s available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall and it often goes on sale which makes it that much more affordable. That is a huge plus for me!

Thoughts: Another small sample… this time 7 ml. But I was able to use it for a couple of weeks so that was nice. This was a nice moisturizer that hydrated my skin. This one also has a nice scent to it. This was the first I have tried of Philosophy’s skincare and it was a positive experience. The only thing to caution with this product is that it contains AHA so always use it with sunscreen. I didn’t really have any issues while I was using it because it was the dead of winter and it was dark when I went to work and then dark when I went home! But sunscreen is something to keep in mind when you know you will be out in the sun!

Thoughts: I was so impressed with this serum! It made my skin so soft and smooth! And I was very surprised as to how long this 15 ml bottle lasted me.  A couple of months, I think? That’s awesome! It smells nice and since it seems to work with my skin, I will definitely add this to my wish list.

Product: Beauty Blender
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes – Holy Grail Product!
Thoughts: I adore my Beauty Blender. You can see my review of it, along with some tips and tricks as to how to use it, here. It just makes applying concealer and foundation so much easier for me! I prefer this to any brush, to be honest. Once you get the hang of it (always make sure you use it with water!), it’s so hard to turn back. But like most things in life, Beauty Blenders do not last forever… I honestly think I’ve had this one for too long. I do already have a new one so it has been replaced. This is truly a favourite of mine!

Product: L’Oreal Brow Plumper by Brow Stylist in Transparent
Rating (out of 5): 5
Repurchase?: Yes
Thoughts: You can definitely tell that this product was well loved as there are no markings left on the tube because it all rubbed off! I had to Google what it was called because I couldn’t remember. This is a fibre infused brow gel and since it was in the shade transparent, I used it to set my brows after using a brow pencil. I really like this product and thought that it worked really well for me. It comes in a light/medium or medium/dark shades too…. something I am willing to try for sure!
