Topbox Unboxing and Review – May 2015 + $10 Beauty Surprise

I will admit, this post is coming a little bit late. But better late than never, right? 🙂 Life has been so busy (or should I say work has been so busy?) that it’s exhausting some days. So much to do… so little time. So let’s get to it!

For the month of May, I requested the Regular Topbox in my wish list survey. This seems to be the case every month as none of the prive options have caught my eye. A quick intro to this subscription: Topbox is a monthly Canadian subscription for $12 a month + tax. You get 4 deluxe products every month and can choose one of the prive boxes on your monthly wishlist (though it is not a guarantee that you will get the box you select).

I also decided to try my luck again and purchase the $10 beauty surprise add-on. But before we get to the surprise, let’s see what I received in the Regular box!

TheFaceShop Herb Day Cleansing Foam Aloe
On the Card: Apply on a wet face and massage with a circular motion. Rinse with lukewarm water.
Full Size: $6.00 CDN for 170 ml. Sample Size: $3.53 CDN for 100 ml.

TheFaceShop is a Korean brand that has expanded its footprint in Canada in the last few years. I know of at least two brick-and-mortar stores here in Edmonton alone. I have tried a number of their products before (I adore their Deep Firming Cleansing Oil!) but have not heard of this cleanser before.

It contains aloe so I’m more than likely going to like it. I don’t see parabens on the ingredients list either so it gets bonus points! I just haven’t tried it yet because I just started a new skincare routine that I just finally figured out – it’s too soon to mess with it! I did notice that it’s only $6 so it’s very affordable if you want to repurchase. I will keep this product around for later.

TheFaceShop Seaweed Moisture Pack
On the Card: Before going to bed, spread evenly over your face, avoiding the eye and lip contour areas.
Full Size: $12.00 CDN for 110 ml. Sample Size: $3.27 CDN for 30 ml.

From the looks of this, it’s a leave-on sleep mask. I don’t know if I like leave-on masks… and again, I haven’t tried this product for the same reason I haven’t tried the cleanser. I might pass on this one.

Just as a sidenote before I move on from these TheFaceShop products, Topbox did include a $5 off coupon to use in store. It doesn’t expire until December 24, 2015 so there is still plenty of time to use it!

Medusa’s Makeup Eyeshadow in “Headhunter”
On the Card: Highly pigmented mineral pressed powder with microsparkles.
Full Size: $8.00 CDN for 2g. Sample Size: $8.00 CDN for 2g – full size!

Oooh, an eyeshadow! I do adore eyeshadows. I have never heard of Medusa’s Makeup so this is a new brand for me. “Headhunter” is a dark shimmery purple and it looks gorgeous in it’s packaging! It swatches okay but it’s not as pigmented as I’d like. It could be because I’m more tanned now? I’m not sure. Anyways, it looks like a shimmery satin dark purple. Because it’s a mineral makeup, it feels silky smooth. It will be great to use just above the lash line to accent your lid. The plus side: it’s a cruelty free product The down side: out of the eight ingredients, two of them are parabens.

D:Fi Reshapeable Spray
On the Card: A styling spray that makes it possible to reshape the hair during the day. Apply on dry or damp hair and create the style you desire.
Full Size: $27.00 CDN for 150ml. Sample Size: $1.62 CDN for 9ml.

And last but not least, is this hair styling porduct from D:Fi. Chatters has this as a men’s product. It kind of smells like a men’s product too. So I’m a little confused. I have never heard of this brand before so I really wouldn’t know. It claims to allow you to “reshape” your hair throughout the day. It’s an interesting concept but not for me. I think my hubby will get more use out of this hair spray than I will.

But wait! There’s more!

There was a replacement product included because I received an expired product last month. Included was a 59 ml sample of Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration Sunscreen. I received this same sample last month and I love it so, even though it’s a duplicate product, I really can’t complain now that I have another one. 😉 First off, it smells delicious! Second, this is a decent sized sample, perfect for your purse, travel or your gym bag for those outdoor workouts. It is SPF 30 which is great and it has “hydrating ribbons” to keep your skin moisturized. I do like this sunscreen so I’m happy I got it. It also came with a coupon, as well, so that will be great if I need to get a full sized bottle.

Overall, the value of my May Topbox was definitely not the greatest. Not including the sunscreen, the total value of this box was $16.42 CDN which is barely over the price of the box. This might actually be my least valued box, sadly. This was a bit disappointing.

But there’s nothing like a $10 beauty surprise to lift one’s spirits!

I’ve had some luck with the beauty surprises (like receiving a full-sized Stila liquid eyeliner and Cover FX primer) but the last one I got was a dud (China Glaze nail polish and a be a bombshell quad). Yet here I am, taking another chance on yet another unknown. Was it worth it in the end? Yeah, I think so. I received an assortment of samples from Bobbi Brown!

I was very surprised to see that I received a Bobbi Brown box. It’s sorta like having a Bobbi Brown prive box but with more products! Here is what was included:

  • Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Samples in “Black Ink and “Steel Ink” with a small brush (Retails for $29.00 CDN for 0.1 oz, Sample is worth $10.15 CDN for 0.035 oz – the entire value of this beauty surprise!)
    • I have tried this product before – in fact, I own two of them! – and love, love, love it. I already own Black Ink but I’m happy that I can try Steel Ink now.
  • Soothing Cleansing Oil (Retails for $50.00 CDN for 200 ml, Sample is worth $3.75 CDN for 15 ml)
  • Hydrating Eye Cream (Retails for $50.00 CDN for 0.5 oz, Sample is worth $10.00 CDN for 0.1 oz)
  • High Shimmer Lip Gloss in “Bare Sparkle” (Retails for $25.00 CDN for 0.24 oz, Sample is worth $8.33 CDN for 0.08 oz)
    • I love this too. Yes, I do own the full sized version of this lippie and have for years. 🙂
  • Smokey Eye Mascara (Retails for $29.00 CDN for 0.29 oz, Sample is worth… I’m not sure. There isn’t a volume on it! Let’s just say it’s about a quarter of the amount – $7.24 CDN)

In addition to the products, it also came with an invitation to visit the Bobbi Brown counter at Holt Renfrew for a makeup less on your choice and a personalized face chart, plus an Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover deluxe sample.

The value of this beauty surprise came to a total of $32.23, not including the mascara. Including the mascara makes it closer to $40. I used to follow this brand quite closely a few years back but it has been awhile since I bought anything so this was a nice surprise. The one thing I would have preferred was larger samples! I know that there are a lot of people complaining about the small sizes but in all honesty, considering Bobbi Brown is a more expensive brand, the value of this $10 beauty surprise was fine! Plus you get to try five different products.

So that’s it, folks! Until next time!
