Unboxing + Review: Boxycharm September 2017 Boxy Baddie

boxycharm september 2017

Hope you all had a great week! With Thanksgiving last weekend, it was a short work week and the weekend is around the corner again so I can’t complain! For my fellow Canadians, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I know I enjoyed mine! Family, friends, food, relaxation… what more could I have asked for?  🙂

boxycharm september 2017

Anyways, back to blogging. 🙂 Let’s talk about September’s Boxycharm! The theme was Boxy Baddie. For those of you who are not familiar with Boxycharm, the details are as follows.

Boxycharm is an American subscription box that ships to Canada. It is $21.00 USD per month or you can get a small discount for a 3-month, 6-month or annual subscription. You can cancel at anytime which is nice. Each month you will receive four to five full-sized beauty items. If you would like to try this sub, I would appreciate it if you would use my link here. 🙂

So let’s get started with this unboxing! I was really excited about this first product – the PUR Soiree Diaries Eyeshadow Palette ($34.00 USD) is beautiful!

This palette contains eight neutral mattes and four glitter shades. You can create four looks using the trio of colours vertically… but of course, you aren’t limited to just those. After using this for about a week now, I find that the shades are very pigmented and they blend out very easily. It’s a pretty slim palette that isn’t heavy so it’s compact enough for travel.

Next, I received an Eyebrow Pencil in the shade Spiked from MAC Cosmetics ($18.00 USD). Gotta admit, until recently, I haven’t seen MAC products in beauty boxes so it’s nice to finally see them in the mix! The shade Spiked is a dark brown which is perfect for me since I like to use a shade lighter on my black brows. it makes it look more natural.  There is also no need to use a sharpener with this one so that’s a plus!

boxycharm september 2017 colourpop ultra satin littlestitious

boxycharm september 2017 colourpop ultra satin littlestitious

I also received a ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Littlestitious ($6.00 USD). I have a number of Ultra Satin’s and I really like the formulation. Unfortunately, this shade isn’t for me. It’s too light for my skin tone but I think it would look great on lighter skin tones. It is a great product so I will pass this on to someone who will be able to use it.

boxycharm september 2017 luminous loose blush studio makeup

Next up, we have the Luminous Loose Blush from Studio Makeup ($35.00 USD). This looks like a very neutral shade. I don’t own any powder blushes so I’m curious to see how this product is! My first impression was that I love this type of packaging. I have a Gosh setting powder in similar packaging and it’s great! Because you can essentially “close” and seal the holes where the product sifts through, it’s less messy which is great especially if you ever want to take it somewhere. There’s no need for you to open the jar only to have the possibility of powder flying everywhere and making a mess! This type of packaging is so great!

boxycharm september 2017 bareminerals face perfecting brush

boxycharm september 2017 bareminerals face perfecting brush

The bareMinerals Face Perfecting Brush ($28.00 USD) is unique in that there is a reservoir in the middle where you put your foundation in it before you application. I tried that method a few times and found that I ended up using too much foundation doing it that way. I also tried it where I would dot my face with foundation and blend it in. The brush works well both ways but I prefer the latter.

boxycharm september 2017 briogeo don't despair repair deep conditioning mask

Last, but not least, is the Don’t Despair Repair Deep Conditioning Mask from Briogeon ($20.00 USD). I have used a deluxe sample of this so I have tried it before. I really like it! It made my hair super soft and I like the scent. This is a great deep conditioner.

That is all for September! The total value of this box was $141.00 USD (which is $175.00 CAD based on today’s exchange rate) which makes it a high value box. I also really like how you get full-sized (or almost full-sized) items. It totally makes this box worth it! Love it!

What did you think of September’s Boxycharm?

Shop My Stash: September 2017

shop my stash august 2017

How did the month of August fly by so quickly? Just like that? Before I put up my August recap, I thought I would share what is in my September basket first. 🙂

What is a Shop My Stash?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Every month, I will be going into my makeup collection and – you guessed it – I will shop my stash. ? Just think of it as a haul post but instead of makeup I bought at Sephora or at Shoppers Drug Mart, it’s a haul straight from my own collection! And I’m hoping that by doing this monthly, I won’t get bored of the products I chose like I did in last year’s Project Pan.

If you’re interested, you can find my other Shop My Stash posts here.

How Shop My Stash Works

Every month I will take one or two of these types of products and put them in a basket.

*Please note, at times, I will not have some items in my basket. The reason why is stated next to the category.

  • Face primer
  • Color correction
  • Concealer
  • Foundation / BB Cream
  • Blush
  • Highlighter
  • Bronzer (None, it’s summer and my skin is too dark for bronzer. We will revisit in fall/winter)
  • Setting powder
  • Pore reducer (Success! None, retired category. I only have one product left: Benefit POREfessional)
  • Eye primer
  • Eye shadow (palette or singles)
  • Eyeliner
  • Brow
  • Brow setting gel (Success! None, retired category. I only have one product left: MAC Brow Set in Clear… which is almost empty! :o)
  • Mascara primer (None, I don’t have one at the moment.)
  • Mascara
  • Setting Spray (Success! None, retired category. I only have three products left in rotation: MAC, Urban Decay and Maybelline setting sprays)

If you haven’t noticed, I did not include any lip products (lipstick, lipgloss, etc.) to my list. This is because they are already in rotation in my purse. I change them around a lot so I didn’t think they needed special attention like the rest of these products!

At the end of each month I will have to make a few decisions: keep the product, continue using it (for those holy grail products I must always use) or get rid of it. I’m hoping that by doing this I can help identify my loves and get rid of what I don’t want anymore. I hope that I can get my collection under control.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I am not going to be limited to only using what’s in my basket. If there’s something I want to use then by all means, I will! The basket is just there to help give me something to focus on that month.

Then at the end of the month, I will summarize my monthly basket (what I loved, what I didn’t love, etc.) and then I will pick out a new basket of products!

Shop My Stash for September 2017

September is here! And my basket looks great! Let’s get right into it.

Unboxing + Review: Boxycharm July 2017 Cutie Pie

boxycharm july 2017

I’m trying out another new subscription this month!  I have cancelled quite a few of my subs in the past few months so I felt like something new. I have heard so many great things about this sub and when the opportunity came when the spoilers were just too good to pass up and they lifted the wait list, I couldn’t help but sign up!

boxycharm july 2017

boxycharm july 2017

Boxycharm is an American subscription box that ships to Canada. It is $21.00 USD per month or you can get a small discount for a 3-month, 6-month or annual subscription. You can cancel at anytime which is nice. Each month you will receive four to five full-sized beauty items. The key words here are FULL-SIZED! Not samples or deluxe samples like other subs! That was one of the things that drew me in. If you would like to try this sub, I would appreciate it if you would use my link here. 🙂

So now that you have all the deets about this sub, let’s see what July had in store for me!

boxycharm july 2017

July’s Boxycharm’s theme is Cutie Pie. There are so many goodies in this box so let’s get started!

boxycharm july 2017 blinc

boxycharm july 2017 blinc

First up, we have the Electric Eyes Palette from Blinc ($45.00 USD). Wow! Those were the first words out of my mouth when I saw the shades in this palette. Sure, the packaging was scratched up but this palette contains five jewel-toned shades that are just gorgeous! It really is the inside that really counts. 😉 Each one is so beautifully pigmented. I had so much fun swatching all these shades! I love golds, bronzes and purples so it’s almost as if this palette was made for me. 😉 Each shade is buttery smooth and easy to work with. Love this!

boxycharm july 2017 colourpop

boxycharm july 2017 colourpop

Next, I received the ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in the shade Lock Diary ($6.00 USD). I am a huge ColourPop fan so this was exciting! This product was from their limited edition Hello Kitty collection. Lock Diary is a bright cool fuschia. I’m talking super bright. Too bright for me! While I likely won’t wear this shade myself, I will say that I’m a fan of the Ultra Satin lippies. It’s a nice product… the shade just wasn’t me!

boxycharm july 2017 bareminerals

I am sure I will find a use for this next product. The BareMinerals Invisible Light Translucent Powder Duo ($32.00 USD) is a palette that has a setting powder on one side and a finishing powder on the other. Being translucent, it’s great for all skin tones. I’m often using powder setting products to keep my makeup in place and looking great so I’m excited to see how this product performs. I already have it set aside and included in my September Shop My Stash line up so stay tuned for more thoughts on this product! 🙂

boxycharm july 2017 winkylux

The next product is great, too. I’ve been using more brow products in the last year or so so it was nice to see the Uni-Brow Universal Eyebrow Pencil by WinkyLux ($12.00 USD). How gorgeous is this gold and white packaging? This is not a fine brow pencil and reminds me of Benefit’s Goof Proof Pencil which I love. I have high hopes for this so I’m hoping that I’m not going to be disappointed!

boxycharm july 2017 project beauty

The last product I received in July is Project Beauty’s Spray. Set. Go. Makeup Setting Spray ($32.00 USD). Am I the only one who finds it odd that there are two makeup setting products int his box? I get that one’s powder and this one is  spray but still. Anyways, I do use setting sprays so I will still give this a try. It’s a nice size to travel with. Not too big and not too small.

So that’s it for my very first Boxycharm! At a value of $127.00 USD, this is a high value box. That’s $160.00 CAD at today’s exchange rate. I do love that everything is full-sized, as well! So far I’m impressed. I just received my August box this past week so look for that unboxing soon!

Do you sub to Boxycharm? What do you think about it?

Topbox July 2015 Regular Unboxing

Hope you are enjoying your weekend! I went camping and it was rainy and cool. Plus I have a summer cold (which started even before we went camping!) which is not really that fun. But I’m at home now and blogging away! Seeing as my August one is on the way, I thought I would post about July’s Topbox.

I’m doing something a little different this time – I am going to call this post an unboxing only. I am hesitant to refer to this as a review because I haven’t tried any of it. Why? I will explain in a bit…

ipsy glam bag July 2014 Review

I am still a little bit behind on my box reviews but I am slowly getting there! I thought I would write up my July ipsy review next. I already received my August bag so I hope to review it shortly.

ipsy glam bag july 2014 review

First off I would just like to say that, in the time I have had my bag (which has been almost a month, I’m guessing), I have used most of the products found in my July bag quite a bit! And because of that, I can really speak my thoughts about most of these. And in the end, I really did like this bag very much.

The theme for July was “Sensationally Sunkissed” and everything came in a super cute pink bag with a wavy edge. I’m not sure I’m a fan of the wavy edge but it’s grown on me a bit.

1. bareMinerals READY® Eyeshadow 2.0 in The Inspiration (Muse and Passion)
From the ipsy site: bareMinerals READY® Eyeshadow 2.0 provides vivid, pigment-packed color with seamless blendability that lasts up to 12 hours. Powered by the proprietary SeaNutritive Mineral™ Complex, it delivers skin-nourishing benefits including reduced appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and puffiness plus boosted moisture levels.

This is the product I was most excited about when I received my bag! Mostly because it would be (believe it or not!) the first time I would be trying bareMinerals eyeshadow. But let’s be honest here… it is also because it purple and I just love purple eyeshadow. 😉 The packaging is so cute! This mini palette is about a third of the full size so that’s pretty good. I know that people have been saying that it’s too small but at the same time I think it is a great size – it is perfect to keep in your purse for quick touch ups! (But then again, this comment is also coming from someone who has many purple eyeshadows already.)

This little pallete – titled “The Inspiration” – is made up of two purple hues. The colour “Muse” is a very light pinkish lilac and “Passion” is a shimmery dark plum. You can see the swatches below on my NC35 skin. When I used this, I followed the instructions on the packaging. I used “Muse” all over my eyelid as a base and then come in with “Passion” on the side. I then blended it. And it worked out great! The eyeshadows are very pigmented and went on smoothly. I love it!

I would definitely get the full size of this product when (If? I honestly do have too many purple shadows!) I run out… I would also love to be able to try some more colours! Quite possibly my favorite product from ipsy ever. Great stuff. 🙂

2. Elizabeth Mott Tints & Sass in Cherry
From the ipsy site: All day color that will kick some SASS! That’s right, we said it. Tints & Sass is the only head turning lip and cheek stain that gives you fail proof color every time! The non-drying formula lasts all day, even after a power lunch and yoga session, and was created to accommodate every second of a gal’s busy schedule.

I will admit – this one surprised me. Mostly because it reminds me of Benefit’s Benetint and I’m not too fond of Benetint. I never found that it gave me enough “tint”. So when I saw that I was getting this in my bag, I was not very excited. But boy oh boy, was I in for a surprise!

Elizabeth Mott’s Tints & Sass is something else. The shade is in “Cherry” and it smells like cherries! It doesn’t taste bad either. I find that it is dark enough to give my skin and lips enough colour, even when I’m tanned in the summer. But don’t let the dark red scare you! It blends in very nicely and before you know it, you will have a soft natural glow. Just a little rosey! 🙂 It is very lightweight and the colour lasts quite awhile on me. It did not dry out my lips which was a huge bonus.  I was also very happy to see a sponge applicator because Benetiint’s brush drives me mad. Maybe that’s why I am not a Benetint fan?

Pretty impressed with this one, though. And the bonus – what I received from ipsy is full sized! You really cannot complain about that.

3. Hang Ten Dark Tanning Oil SPF 08
From the ipsy site: Highlight your healthy glow with our organically indulgent dark tanning oil. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, & exotic plant extracts. Tan naturally!

Well, what can I say? I didn’t crack this one open. I tan naturally and so easily so I have no need for a product like this. Someone else could probably benefit more from this than me so it’s going up for swap.  I hear it smells great, though!

sample details: 1 fl oz, $1.50 USD
retail details: 8 fl oz, $11.99 USD

4. Marrakesh Hair Care’s Marrakesh Endz
From the ipsy site: Our powerful blend of nutrient-rich Argan Oil, from Morocco, ultra fortifying Hemp Seed Oil, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, and Panthenol seals and repairs split ends, while preventing future damage. Ends will naturally look and feel thicker with long lasting frizz and static control that is safe for color treated hair!

This came just in time! I have been growing my hair out for my wedding so I haven’t cut it in awhile and I have been using hot styling products a lot. Those two things combined has given me split ends like you wouldn’t believe! So this was a welcomed product. Something that would repair my hair is just what the doctor ordered! I really like how it smells (it is not overpowering at all) and it’s not sticky in my hair. I noticed that it did tame the frizz that is my hair.

I am pretty sure I have already used at least half of the tube since I got it. That’s good because it means I really like the product! But also bad because when I run out, I’m not sure where I will get more. If anyone knows where I can get this in Canada, please let me know in the comments below!

5. wHet Nail Polish in “Facetious”
From the ipsy site: Facetious is defined as playfully jocular or humorous, and that’s exactly how you’ll feel in this flashy shade from wHet Nail Polish. This chip resistant, high shine, vegan polish is “three free” and void of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, and dpd (dibutyle phthalate). Plus, it’s exclusively made in the USA, and never tested on animals.

As intimidating as a dark blue polish may look, I do love them! In fact, I am pretty sure that I already have a similar color in my collection somewhere. But I tried it anyways.

I had not heard of wHet nail polishes before so this was new to me. The consistency of this was very thin. At two coats, it was okay but to really make the color pop, I had to put on a third coat. I don’t usually like putting on three coats because it chips that much easier. You can see what it looks like on my pinky in what I believe is the very first nail swatch ever on the starpixel.ca blog!

I will be honest, I have not tested the longevity of this polish – my nails are still recovering from gel polish from my wedding so I’m giving it my nails a break and going au natural until the end of the month. I don’t think I would purchase more of these. Partially because I don’t like how thin the consistency is but mostly because I am not fond of the $15 USD price tag. That is a tad too steep for someone who has a bazillion nail polishes already!

retail details: 15 ml, $15.00 USD

At a value of around $52.00 USD, the value was pretty good. I was able to use (and adore!) three out of the five products which is better than none at all. The dark oil and nail polish just weren’t for me. Either way, I still really liked July’s bag!

What was your favorite product in your July bag?

’til next time, friends! 🙂
