Yes… it is June. I apologize for my tardiness but for most of April and May, the NHL playoffs took over my life. This was the first time in a very, very long time that the Oilers made it into the playoffs so to me it was a big deal! 11 years of not having post season hockey in Edmonton was rough so I had to watch every game and games were pretty pretty much every other day. The Oilers made it to Game 7 in Round 2 in the Western Conference semi-finals before getting eliminated. I’m so proud of this team! And now that the post season is over, my (and all the other hardcore fans here in YEG) life can get back to normal again… and for me, that means my evenings are free again and I can go back to blogging.
While this is my Shop My Stash recap from April, I still felt that it was important for me to write about it. It really helps in terms of accountability to myself and getting back on track. I used many of these products well into May and because of that I decided my next basket is what I used for the rest of May and into June.
Without further adieu, let’s get started!
For those of you who are new to this series, every month in 2017. I will be selecting (or ‘shopping’) different items from my makeup collection (aka the ‘Stash’) in an attempt to rediscover and use up what I already own instead of going to the store or shopping online. When your collection gets out of hand, you tend to forget what you already have.
If you want to read up more about this series, please see my introductory post. It contains a pretty thorough explanation as to what this is all about. 🙂 Also you can check out all my other Shop My Stash posts here.
I break down my recap posts into three parts: empties, keepers and rejects. Included is a quick write up about each product to express my thoughts about each one. I like to start off with success so lets look at the empties first! Grab a cup of tea or coffee. This is gonna be a long one – but a good one! I promise. 😉
When I first started this, I knew that I could not sustain a steady stream of empties because it’s makeup and makeup is just that much harder to use up compared to something like skincare, for example. I just wouldn’t have as many empties as I would in the beginning. In the beginning, you’re excited about finishing products so, naturally, you start with the items that are well on their way to becoming empty anyways. Those are the “quick wins”. Once those are finished, empties might be few and far between in the makeup world as proven by my empties in April – there was only one.
Face Primer: Too Faced Hangover RX Replenishing Face Primer
I have used up a couple of these deluxe samples now and I continue to really love this primer. This super lightweight, very hydrating primer is one of my go-to’s! It absorbs quickly into my skin and has a light scent. It does a great job keeping my makeup in place. No complaints here! Other than the fact that this is empty. But that’s okay, I still have one more deluxe sample I can use.
There are a lot of keepers in April. That’s good and bad. Good because I have reassurance that I own products I like and even love. Not so good because keeping these items is not helping me make my makeup collection any smaller! We have a lot of ground to cover so we should begin now.
Face Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish More Than Primer Blemish Control
While this is not my favourite, it’s a small enough sample that I will likely use it up. I didn’t notice a difference with my blemishes at all but my makeup stayed put. Good enough reason to keep it.
Pore Reducer: Benefit POREfessional
Honestly, this is holy grail for me. It is great for the pores on my nose and forehead and it really helps to even out my skin prior to makeup application. You don’t need much so even a deluxe sized tube lasts a long time. I have a ton of these samples which is a great money saver as I won’t need to buy a full sized one yet. (Which I have used up before. A full sized tube truly does last forever!) I will continue to work through my deluxe samples happily.
Concealer: Maybelline FitMe Concealer in Medium
My boly grail drugstore concealer. It really does feel and look like a dupe for the NARS Radiant Cream Concealer (which I also love). Great coverage that’s buildable. The shade Medium is a perfect shade match for me, too. This is my second tube of this stuff. I love it that much. 🙂
Concealer: IT Cosmetics Bye By Undereye in Medium
Super thick, super coverage! I don’t often need this much coverage but when I do, it works so well. You don’t need to use much of it to be effective. It’s not my favourite but it’s still good enough to keep on hand.
Foundation / BB Cream: Maybelline FitMe Matte + Poreless Foundation in Natural Beige, Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup in Neutral
I just love the FitMe line from Maybelline. I just think all the products I have tried have been so great and this one is no different. Similar to the regular FitMe foundation, this also applies easily and does a great job covering up dark spots and blemishes, giving me a matte look. It blends great, too. I can’t say enough good things about these FitMe foundation and concealers.
Foundation / BB Cream: Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup in Neutral
This is a nice foundation that has medium coverage. IT fees light on my skin and blends nicely. I like the packaging because the squeeze tube makes it easy to use and is compact enough that it’s protable and great for traveling or handy to keep in your weekend bag. Like when I go camping and need a bit of coverage. 🙂
Blush: Elizabeth Mott Show Me Your Cheeks in Peach Pink
Seriously, I feel like I am repeating myself with all this holy grail business in this post but I only tell the truth. And this one is my holy grail blush! I have backups of it. Yes, plural. So I’m not afraid of using this gem from ipsy. I love using it! It’s the perfect shade for me! It’s so good. So good.
Blush: Physicians Formula Butter Blush in Natural Glow
Love this blush! It has nice pigmentation and it smells so nice. It’s so smooth and buttery, too! I can see how this product got it’s name. I will continue to use it, for sure!
Highlighter: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter in Opal
I adore Becca highlighters but this was my first time trying the liquid version. You definitely don’t need very much to achieve a natural glow. I usually just use my finger to apply it and pat it on the spots I use highlighter on, such as high on my cheekbones and the bridge of my nose. I like it but I still prefer the pressed powder version.
Setting Powder: GOSH prime ‘n set Primer & Mattifying Setting Powder
This is my second tub of this stuff so that is proof enough that I really like this product. The Shoppers I go to (well, three locations to be exact) always seems to be sold out of this so when I finally saw it restocked, I snatched this one up! This translucent powder can also be used as a primer but I primarily use it to set my make up. It doesn’t look powdery on my face at all and my make up stays put. I think it’s great!
Mascara Primer: Wet n Wild PhotoFocus Lash Primer
I am starting to notice that the consistency of my Wet n Wild eyeshadow primer has changed. It is getting thicker. I like this product a lot but I think this only has a month… maaaybe two.. left before it ends up on my empties list. I have been using this since November or December so that makes sense.
Mascara: Benefit Roller Lash Deluxe Mascara
I still love this mascara. This particular tube has been in use since March so I will likely continue using it in May and June. It keeps my lashes curled and I found that it thickens my lashes, as well. Great all around! And I love these deluxe sized mascaras.
Mascara: Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Deluxe Mascara
Another great mascara! This has really been a pleasant surprise. I am really enjoying this one. It separates my lashes nicely and thickens and lengthens them, too. I may prefer this over the Roller Lash if I’m being honest with myself. Gah. They are both pretty great.
Brow: ColourPop Brow Pencil in Bangin’ Brunette
I really like this ColourPop brow pencil… except that it keeps breaking on me. The formulation is great and this is the perfect shade match so that my brows look filled in but natural. I just wish it wasn’t so fragile!
Brow Setting Gel: MAC Brow Set in Clear
Probably my third, perhaps fourth, tube. Love it. Enough said. I don’t have any other brow gel at the moment so I think for May and June, I will use this one and then discontinue this item from my Shop My Stash. When there’s only one, there’s no point bringing it back every month!
Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper
Another holy grail but it’s drying out. I think this only has a month or two left in it, as well. This is definitely one that I will keep buying over and over again… well, maybe I will get my next KVD liquid liner after I finish the others I have first.
Eye primer: Wet n Wild PhotoFocus Eyeshadow Primer
This is a good eye primer. It keeps my shadow staying put and lasting all day. I will continue to use it.
Setting Spray: Urban Decay All-Nighter Makeup Setting Spray
So good! It helps keep my makeup on my face all day. It is also very refreshing to spray on anytime during the day. Love it.
Eyeshadow (palette or singles): Too Faced Natural Eyes Neutral Eye Shadow Collection
A holy grail palette of mine. I know.. this phrase is starting to get overused in this post! I don’t have many palettes where I have hit pan on but for this one, I have hit pan on three shades! It’s just so versatile and you can use it with any look from natural to glam and that is why I love it. Such a great palette to have in one’s collection.
Eyeshadow (palette or singles): tarte Tartelette tease palette
Love this one, too! I’ve hit pan on one shade. The mirror is also great so I do sometimes keep this in my purse. Like the Too Faced palette I just talked about, this one is very pigmented and the shades are so versatile. The shades are also so me.
There is only one in April. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. Good because I did actually spend my money on products I like or love. Bad because I am trying to destash and I’m only getting rid of one thing. But it’s still something!
Foundation / BB Cream: Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft-Matte Hydrating Foundation in Natural Beige
Natural Beige is definitely not my shade… which is odd because most natural beige shades work for me. I find this shade too grey for my skin tone. It just doesn’t look good at all.
So that’s it for now! There were a lot of products I loved in April! It was a good month and I really liked (most) everything that I used.
My May and June Shop My Stash post is well overdue. I already have that blog post in progress (I was working on it in tandem with this one) so check back in a few days as I plan to have it posted this weekend. 🙂
I hope you’re all having a great week! Until next time! 🙂
