Boxycharm December 2017 Glitz and Glam – Unboxing and Review

boxycharm december 2017

Happy New Year! I hope you had a safe and fun New Years with friends and family.

Today is the first day of 2018 and it’s also the first blog post of the year. This is going to be the best year for Starpixel yet! 🙂

We are still in a deep freeze here in good ole’ Alberta so the goal for today is to continue to stay warm. This past week was a  good week to be a homebody because it’s so cold outside! It’s given me a chance to catch up on things at home which also includes catching up on some unboxings… like this one. 🙂

Today we are going to take a look at what I receive in my December Boxycharm. The theme for this month is Glitz and Glam which is perfect for the holiday season! There were a number of variations for Canadian subscribers this month which is different from before when everyone would receive the same box.

boxycharm december 2017

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Boxycharm, it is an American subscription box that ships to Canada. It is $21.00 USD per month or you can get a small discount for a 3-month, 6-month or annual subscription. You can cancel at anytime which is nice. Each month you will receive four to five full-sized beauty items. If you would like to try this sub, I would appreciate it if you would use my link here. 🙂

Now on to the goodies!

The Real Her Blush Kit ($32.00 USD) is paraben free, cruelty free, gluten free and contains natural ingredients. This palette includes three shades: Fearless (a shimmery pink), Limitless (a matte coral) and Unstoppable (a rose shade with a hint of glitter). Each shade can be applied lightly for a more natural look but you can definitely build it up for more colour.

I also received the Beaute Basics Bronze Essentials ($39.95 USD) in my box. This bronzer contains three matte and two shimmery gold shades which can be used individually or mixed together. It’s a nice compact and has a mirrot too. This makes this bronzer very portable.

The Makeup Geek Showstopper Creme Stain in the shade Quickstep ($12.00 USD) is a cool toned beige liquid lipstick. This is a nice matte shade that applies smoothly and feels comfortable on my lips. I’m not typically a huge fan of lip stains but this one applies more like a creamy liquid lipstick. I wasn’t sure about this shade at first but it does look less brown once I have it on.

The tarte tarteist Lash Paint Mascara ($23.00 USD) is awesome! I have used this in the past and I love it. The formulation strengthens and conditions your lashes while giving you extra volume. I don’t find it clumpy at all and I adore the brush. The brush does wonders on my lashes! I’m so glad I got a full-sized mascara! Can’t wait to reintroduce it to my day-to-day makeup.

The last item I received was the Vintage Cosmetics Illuminating Face Highlighter in Rose Gold ($32.00 USD). This highlighter is beautiful! It’s easy to brush on lightly for a subtle but it’s also buildable if you want to go all out. I’m such a highlighter junkie so this was perfect for me!

And that, my friends, was my December Boxycharm. The total value of this box was $138.95 USD or $175.23 CAD based on today’s exchange rate.

I continue to love the fact that you receive full-sized products in this box. My faves for this month are the tarte mascara and Vintage Cosmetics highlighter… it’s a toss up, really!

Unboxing + Review: ipsy November 2017 All You

ipsy november 2017

November was a very hectic and busy month! I had to put blogging aside in favour of things in real life that needed more attention at the time. Then with vacation towards the end of the month, time to spend blogging was quite scarce. So at the end of the day, November was spent taking a break to recharge from everything!

But I’m back now and I hope that my new content that I’m planning in the coming weeks will be well received. I know I need to go beyond Shop My Stashes and unboxings in order for my blog (and myself) to grow.

Right now, though, I would still like to share my November ipsy glam bag with you.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with ipsy, it is a monthly beauty subscription from the US. This subscription is $10.00 USD  a month in the US and $10.00 USD + $4.00 USD shipping for Canadians. You get a mix of skincare, makeup and haircare deluxe and full sized products. And you get a different style of bag each month. If you are interested in trying this subscription, please use my link here.

ipsy november 2017 all you

Getting on with the glam bag, November’s theme was All You. There were two jewel-toned bags available – one in gold and another in teal. I received the teal one which is perfect because other than my love for purple, I usually gravitate towards blues and greens. I’m not sure if I would’ve like the gold one at all. Within this teal bag were five items. Spoiler alert: I loved it all!

ipsy november 2017

ipsy november 2017 all you

The first product I received was the Barfly Highlighter in the shade Candlelit from ‘Tini Beauty ($12.00 USD, 3.5 g, full sized). This is a cream highlighter stick that is super cute and super portable. Candlelit is a soft pink shade that is easy to apply and goes on super smooth. It’s very pigmented and also easy to blend. I’m a big fan of stick highlighters (and honestly, just highlighters in general!) so I’m looking forward to using this one more. Plus this is full sized! Can’t go wrong with that! I love receiving full sized items on my ipsy bag.

The Crown Brush C141 Chisel Brush ($5.69 USD, full sized) is so soft! This looks like it will be a great brush to apply powders like blush, highlighters and finishing/setting powders. Can’t say to to a new brush! Especially one this soft!

ipsy november 2017 crown brush c141

I’ve never tried MAC primers before so I was happy to see the MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance Primer ($5.00 CAN, 6 ml, deluxe sample). This is a highlighting primer so it’s said to give your face a glow. The description states that it controls oil, hydrates and smoothes you your complexion. The vitamin E and C that’s in this primer will help protect your skin from things like smog, pollution and free radicals. Looking forward to really giving this product a try!

As a self-proclaimed lip balm junkie, the Sky Iceland Berry Lip Fix ($7.00 CAN, 5 ml, deluxe sample) was a welcomed surprise! Add to that the temperatures are dropping so it was perfect timing. My lips are so dry from the colder temperatures! This is a vegan and all-natural lip balm.

Last but not least is a product from a brand that I really like. I received the tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in the shade Feisty ($10.00 CAN, 1.5g, deluxe sample). Feisty is a dusty rose shade… but from the looks of it, it looks more dusty than rose. I’m a big fan of these blushes! It’s great for both dry and oily skin. It’s easy to apply, blendable and buildable. I don’t have this shade yet so I will be adding this to my collection!

ipsy november 2017 tarte blush

That’s it for November! The value of this bag was $44.57 CAN (based on today’s exchange rate). I adore everything that was in this bag so it was totally worth it for me this month!

How did your ipsy glam bag fare? Did you love it? Was it not so great? Share in the comments below!

Unboxing + Review: Boxycharm September 2017 Boxy Baddie

boxycharm september 2017

Hope you all had a great week! With Thanksgiving last weekend, it was a short work week and the weekend is around the corner again so I can’t complain! For my fellow Canadians, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I know I enjoyed mine! Family, friends, food, relaxation… what more could I have asked for?  🙂

boxycharm september 2017

Anyways, back to blogging. 🙂 Let’s talk about September’s Boxycharm! The theme was Boxy Baddie. For those of you who are not familiar with Boxycharm, the details are as follows.

Boxycharm is an American subscription box that ships to Canada. It is $21.00 USD per month or you can get a small discount for a 3-month, 6-month or annual subscription. You can cancel at anytime which is nice. Each month you will receive four to five full-sized beauty items. If you would like to try this sub, I would appreciate it if you would use my link here. 🙂

So let’s get started with this unboxing! I was really excited about this first product – the PUR Soiree Diaries Eyeshadow Palette ($34.00 USD) is beautiful!

From Top to Bottom: Private Party, Socialite, Gala, Mogul

From Top to Bottom: Splurge, Stunner, Snazzy, Epic

From Top to Bottom: Glitzy, Twinkle, Dazzle, Cosmo

This palette contains eight neutral mattes and four glitter shades. You can create four looks using the trio of colours vertically… but of course, you aren’t limited to just those. After using this for about a week now, I find that the shades are very pigmented and they blend out very easily. It’s a pretty slim palette that isn’t heavy so it’s compact enough for travel.

boxycharm september 2017 mac cosmetics eye brow pencil in spiked

boxycharm september 2017 mac cosmetics eye brow pencil in Spiked

Next, I received an Eyebrow Pencil in the shade Spiked from MAC Cosmetics ($18.00 USD). Gotta admit, until recently, I haven’t seen MAC products in beauty boxes so it’s nice to finally see them in the mix! The shade Spiked is a dark brown which is perfect for me since I like to use a shade lighter on my black brows. it makes it look more natural.  There is also no need to use a sharpener with this one so that’s a plus!

boxycharm september 2017 colourpop ultra satin littlestitious

boxycharm september 2017 colourpop ultra satin littlestitious

I also received a ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Littlestitious ($6.00 USD). I have a number of Ultra Satin’s and I really like the formulation. Unfortunately, this shade isn’t for me. It’s too light for my skin tone but I think it would look great on lighter skin tones. It is a great product so I will pass this on to someone who will be able to use it.

boxycharm september 2017 luminous loose blush studio makeup

Next up, we have the Luminous Loose Blush from Studio Makeup ($35.00 USD). This looks like a very neutral shade. I don’t own any powder blushes so I’m curious to see how this product is! My first impression was that I love this type of packaging. I have a Gosh setting powder in similar packaging and it’s great! Because you can essentially “close” and seal the holes where the product sifts through, it’s less messy which is great especially if you ever want to take it somewhere. There’s no need for you to open the jar only to have the possibility of powder flying everywhere and making a mess! This type of packaging is so great!

boxycharm september 2017 bareminerals face perfecting brush

boxycharm september 2017 bareminerals face perfecting brush

The bareMinerals Face Perfecting Brush ($28.00 USD) is unique in that there is a reservoir in the middle where you put your foundation in it before you application. I tried that method a few times and found that I ended up using too much foundation doing it that way. I also tried it where I would dot my face with foundation and blend it in. The brush works well both ways but I prefer the latter.

boxycharm september 2017 briogeo don't despair repair deep conditioning mask

Last, but not least, is the Don’t Despair Repair Deep Conditioning Mask from Briogeon ($20.00 USD). I have used a deluxe sample of this so I have tried it before. I really like it! It made my hair super soft and I like the scent. This is a great deep conditioner.

That is all for September! The total value of this box was $141.00 USD (which is $175.00 CAD based on today’s exchange rate) which makes it a high value box. I also really like how you get full-sized (or almost full-sized) items. It totally makes this box worth it! Love it!

What did you think of September’s Boxycharm?

Unboxing + Review: ipsy September 2017 Like A Boss

ipsy september 2017

It’s October and here is September’s ipsy glam bag! I don’t know about you but I love fall! Not so much the cold or the approaching winter but the colours are amazing on the trees. I got to really enjoy them when we went on our last camping trip of the season this past weekend. It’s beautiful outside!

ipsy september 2017

ipsy September 2017

Another month, another ipsy glam bag. September’s theme is Like A Boss. The five products comes in a slick looking black glam bag. It’s black, faux leather and features spikes. How’s that for a “boss” of a bag? 😉

ipsy september 2017

The first item I received is the Luxie Rose Gold Medium Angled Shading Eye Brush #207 ($14.99 USD). I love all my Luxie brushes so I have high hopes for this one! The bristles are so soft and if they are like my other Luxie eye brushes, the make blending your eyeshadows super easy. So glad I received this! And honestly, the rose gold is beautiful!

ipsy september 2017 pixi

Next up is the Pixi by Petra Beauty Blush Duo in Peach Honey ($7.93 USD). I love the looks of this blush! Use one side or the other or mix the two up. 🙂 Using a light hand, this could also make a great highlighter because of the shimmer. Multi-purpose products are always a huge plus for me!

ipsy september 2017 smashbox

I also received the Smashbox Photo Finish Radiance Primer ($9.75 USD). I’m always on the fence with Smashbox primers but I will give this one a try.  I’m not sure if it’s an all over primer or just something I would maybe mix in with my foundation. Might be good for winter as it will give you a bit of a glow!

ipsy september 2017

ipsy september 2017

The next product I received was the Elizabeth Mott Pop! Goes The Shadow in Gunmetal ($4.55 USD). This isn’t really my kind of shade… I don’t often wear black shades or grey shades very often. I think this one is a pass for me.

ipsy september 2017 bio fresh

Last but not least was the re:p real elemental practice Bio Fresh Mask with Real Calming Herb ($6.31 USD). I haven’t used masks as often lately but I think I will try this one. It smells really nice and it looks like it will be good for sensitive skin.

That’s September’s bag! Valued at $43.53 USD ($54.48 CAN based on today’s exchange rate), it’s not the highest valued bag I have received but it’s still not bad. I will still use most of it, except for maybe the eyeshadow, so that’s okay.

Like what you see here and would like to try ipsy? This subscription is $10.00 USD  a month in the US and $10.00 USD + $4.00 USD shipping for Canadians. You get a mix of skincare, makeup and haircare deluxe and full sized products. And you get a different style of bag each month. If you are interested in trying this subscription, please use my link here.

What was in your ipsy bag this month? 🙂

Shop My Stash Recap: August 2017

shop my stash recap august 2017

Happy September! How did the month of August fly by? Just like that! I guess they really mean it when they say that time flies by when you’re having fun!

Month #8 of my 2017 Shop My Stash challenge is over! Honestly, I really am enjoying how each month gives me a different mix of old and new beauty products to play with. The new stuff is always a lot of fun but I’m also really liked rediscovering a lot of products, too.

Still going strong with my low-buy, as well. I have only purchased two beauty products in the past three months (since I purchased something from Sephora in very early June which is my birthday month) and they have been from Too Faced’s new Peaches and Cream Collection. And honestly, the foundation just came today and the powder should be here tomorrow or Thursday so it’s really, really recent too. So far, so good! Now the real test will be when all those gorgeous Christmas sets come out. We shall see how I fare then. 🙂

Anyways, let’s get moving on this. There is a lot to cover!

For those of you who are new to this series, every month in 2017. I will be selecting (or ‘shopping’) different items from my makeup collection (aka the ‘Stash’) in an attempt to rediscover and use up what I already own instead of going to the store or shopping online. When your collection gets out of hand, you tend to forget what you already have.

If you want to read up more about this series, please see my introductory post. It contains a pretty thorough explanation as to what this is all about. ?  Also you can check out all my other Shop My Stash posts here.

I break down my recap posts into three parts: empties, keepers and rejects. Starting in May and June, I have also added a new category called “retired” which I will explain in that section. I think having this new category is a very good thing! Under each category, there is a quick write up about each product to express my thoughts about each one. I like to start off with success so lets look at the empties first. Quick wins! 🙂

The Empties

Not many in this category this time around. Actually, in all reality, there are none. There were quite a few “almost empties”, though. Just one product to list here. See why below.

shop my stash recap august 2017

Foundation / BB Cream: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB 8-in-1 Beauty Balm SPF 30 in Medium
Okay, this is not empty but it is expired so I’m throwing it out. But to be clear, I did not dislike it. In fact, I really like it! It’s a great alternative to heavier foundations when all you want is some light coverage. This is great in the summer months. Super light on my skin and doesn’t cause me to break out. I think this is my second tube of this product and I would not hesitate to repurchase it again!

The Keepers

Again, the bulk of the products fall under this category. Not surprising at all! So here goes!

shop my stash recap august 2017

Face primer: Temptu Base Smooth & Matte Primer, Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer
I am surprised that I enjoyed the Temptu primer so much. It kind of reminds me of the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. It’s a very similar consistency in that it’s liquidy smooth and goes on like a dream! I’m sad that this was only sample sized and it is one of the products I was referring to as an “almost empty” above. Love it! I would repurchase this one for sure. The only thing I don’t like is that there is still product in the bottle but the little metal ball keeps plugging it up. I love it so much I may have to cut into it with scissors! 😉 The Smashbox primer was also very nice. It did moisturize my under eye area. I was also pleasantly surprised by this, as well. I will continue to use it and I would repurchase it, as well.

Foundation / BB Cream: Too Faced Born This Way Absolute Perfection Foundation in Natural Beige
So this is a really nice foundation. It’s gives you great coverage but it still feels light on your skin. Super easy to blend in, too. Looking at the bottle, I’ve used up half of it already! I will continue to use this one up until it’s empty and yes, I would repurchase it.

Highlighter: Benefit Girl Meets Pearl Liquid Pearl for Face, Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight in Hefty Highlight
As I use different types of highlighters, I’m more and more convinced that powder is my favourite type. This Benefit highlighter is liquid and it’s okay. I prefer their Watt’s Up cream highlighter. While it’s not my fave, I will still finish it up but I’m not sure if I would repurchase it. The Clinique highlighter was also very good. It’s a cream highlighter that’s easy to apply and easy to blend. I received this as a 100 point perk from Sephora and while it looks large, looks can be deceiving! There’s not a lot there. I am not sure I would repurchase it. I prefer the shade of the Benefit Watt’s Up to this one which is on the pinker side of things.

Setting powder: GOSH prime ‘n set Primer & Mattifying Setting Powder
If I can recall correctly, this is this product’s second go round in my Shop My Stash Series. See my thoughts way back in April.

shop my stash recap august 2017

Blush: tarte Bling It On Amazonian Clay Blush Palette
This is SO good. Each and every colour in this blush palette looks great on me and the formulation is just dreamy. It goes on nicely, blends wonderfully and you can dust it on lightly or build it up. I can’t say anything bad about this! I love it!

Eye primer: Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Shadow Primer
Goodness, this surprised me! I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it is! And now I’m sad that it’s just a deluxe sized sample. It’s silky and goes on my eyelids nicely. And most importantly, it keeps my eyeshadow in place! So it’s safe to say that I love it and that I would repurchase it.

Eyeliner: NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via Veneto, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Dark Brown
The NARS eyeliner goes on smooth and doesn’t tug at all so it’s safe to say that I like it! Which says a lot because I favour liquid liner to pencil liners immensely. The Stila liner was nice but I don’t find myself using brown eyeliners much. Still pretty good, though!

Brow: Anastasia Brow Powder Duo in Dark Brown
I honestly forgot I had this until I started digging in my eye products drawer. This is partially because that drawer is a mess but also partially because I’ve been using brow pencils mostly so I haven’t reached for this in awhile. After using it for the last month, I do still very much like it and it does look good when I use an angle brow brush to fill in my brows with this product. I will continue using this and I would consider repurchasing it… when I run out of all my other brow products, anyways!

Mascara: tarte lights, camera, flashes Mascara, Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara
This tarte mascara is slowly making it’s way up the list and it’s one of my favourite mascaras now. It separates and lengthens my lashes and they just look great. I am hoping that the full sized product is the same because I’ve seen some reviews saying they aren’t. If that’s the case, then I’m going to be very sad and on the hunt for more deluxe samples! The newest Lancome mascara – Monsieur Big – is also really good! I received this from ChickAdvisor’s Product Review Club and I’m still using it. It adds volume to my lashes and I love it. Though at times it does clump a little but that’s nothing a lash brush can’t fix! Both are great mascaras. Both I would repurchase.

shop my stash recap august 2017

Eye shadow (palette or singles): Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette, Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow Palette in Fade In
I’ve always known that I adored the Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette but I totally forgot about the Smashbox one. First let’s take a look at the Too Faced one. I find it has great pigmentation and blends well. It also smells peachy! (If you have tried their chocolate bar palettes, think of that but with peaches instead of chocolate!). The Smashbox one gives me a great mix of colours for a nice smokey eye. Again it’s very pigmented and it blends well. I can’t complain about either one of these and they’re both keepers!

The Rejects

This one pains me to list it. Why? Because I love the brand.

shop my stash recap august 2017

Concealer: IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illuminator Full Coverage Anti-Aging Waterproof Concealer
I really wanted to love this!!! But it didn’t quite work out for me. I didn’t find that it blended very well under my eyes… even when I’m using the teeny tiniest bit. 🙁 I don’t know if it’s just because it’s a sample and it might have dried out a bit or what but I found it difficult to use. I do really love their original concealer so maybe I just have an issue with this formulation. I’m not sure. So sad.

The Retired

Nothing to retire this month. /shrug

So that is all for now! August was a blur but at least it was spent using some pretty amazing products. I’m well into my September basket now so check back in early October for that recap. 🙂
