Happy Easter! I hope you are enjoying your Easter weekend – I certainly know that I am because this is a much needed break for me!
Well, it is time for my next instalment of my Shop My Stash recap and this time we are taking a peek at my March basket of goodies.
For those of you who are new to this series, every month in 2017. I will be selecting (or ‘shopping’) different items from my makeup collection (aka the ‘Stash’) in an attempt to rediscover and use up what I already own. When your collection gets out of hand, you tend to forget what you already have.
If you want to read up more about this series, please see my introductory post. It contains a pretty thorough explanation as to what this is all about. 🙂 Also you can check out all my other Shop My Stash posts here.
I break down my recap posts into three parts: empties, keepers and rejects. Included is a quick write up about each product to express my thoughts about each one. I like to start off with success so lets look at the empties first! Grab a cup of tea or coffee. This is gonna be a long one – but a good one! I promise. 😉
How happy was I to see all these empties in March? Very! I don’t know about you but I love discussing empties so, so much! I just find it so satisfying using things up – especially makeup! I always struggle to finish makeup. Hair, body and skin care products always seem so much easier to go through so I find it a real achievement to finish up makeup! Not much else to say other than, here’s my makeup trash. 😉 Rather than adding these to a future empties post, I’ll provide a short review of them now.
Face Primer: Too Faced Primed & Poreless Pure Oil-Free Skin Smoothing Face Primer
This product was carried over from January/February’s round because I have two of them. I love Too Faced’s Primed and Poreless Primer so I had high hopes for this one! To be honest, I did like it at first – which is why I decided to carry it over from the previous month – but as I kept using it, it just didn’t pan out for me. Such a shame since I do tend to have sensitive skin and I really liked how this was oil- free. My face actually did get oiler than usual when I used this primer which didn’t make much sense! So yes, I used up one and a half tubes of this stuff. And in a way, I could technically also put this under the Rejects because one of the deluxe samples is not empty but meh. Small technicalities. At the end of the day, no I will not be repurchasing this one.
Pore Reducer: Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser
I am pretty sure I have had this product FOREVER! Considering I only use this on my nose and a bit on my forehead and cheeks, this lasted me a long, long time. I could have stopped using it but I kept going because I didn’t mind it at all. It did a great job making my pores look smaller and it worked with my skin. It didn’t make it overly oily or greasy. So I used it up. It only took me a couple of years! Super easy to find anywhere you find Maybelline products and it’s also very affordable. I would repurchase this in the future but I have a whole bunch of Benefite POREfessional deluxe samples to go through, first!
Eye Primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer
Here is another product that seems to last me forever and a day! I am a huge fan of the Too Face eye shadow primer because it always keeps my eye makeup staying put. It’s not greasy when I put it on. AND it lasts a long time so it’s very cost effective. I am pretty sure I have used a full sized tube and a couple of deluxe sized samples already so the fact that I keep going back to it means I adore it. So yes, I would repurchase this one in a heart beat! Good thing I have a couple of deluxe samples of this one still kicking around. 🙂
Eyeliner: Ciate Fierce Flicks Liquid Eyeliner
I have been using this for a few months now. I believe I started using this back in October or November of last year? I would rotate between this one and my holy grail eyeliner. To be perfectly honest, I was pleasantly surprised with the Ciate liquid eyeliner! I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. It is very easy to use and line my upper lash line. It was a dark black which was great. It’s more like a brush tip similar to the Stila liquid liner. Super happy with this! You can tell that I used it a lot because, well, the labelling on the pen has rubbed off completely. Whoops! Overall a fabulous liquid liner. I would definitely get another one of these in the future.
Mascara: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Deluxe Mascara
I really wanted to like this one because I heard many good things about it. I’m not sure if it’s just because I have had this tube for awhile now and it’s old but I found it to be way too clumpy for my liking! I couldn’t apply it on my lashes without it clumping on my lashes. I was not a fan. But I will give it the benefit of the doubt because so many people like it. I do have a new tube of this because I got one as a freebie from my last tarte order so I really need to give it another try. If I still don’t like it… well, at least I gave it another chance. But for now, I would not repurchase this one.
This is usually the largest section of my recaps post… which I am actually glad about because then I feel a little better. It means I didn’t completely waste all my money buying a bunch of duds! Sure, it doesn’t help my stash get smaller but that’s okay. These products are keepers that will stay in my stash because I know that I will continue to use them.
Color Correction: NYX Color Correcting Concealer Palette
My fave color correcting product EVER! Honestly, I am so happy with this palette. It has every colour you need whether you want to correct redness or undereye circles. It goes on easily with a small concealer brush. I don’t use color correctors often but this one is the one I reach for when I need more than just a concealer! Definitely a keeper!
Concealer: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser for Dark Circles Treatment Concealer with Goji Berry
I have used one of these up before… this is my second one. Honestly one of my favourite concealers. Excellent coverage, easy to use packaging, blends really well… I can go on and on! I will continue to repurchase this one each time I finish one. I love it that much!
Foundation / BB Cream: Rimmel London BB Cream 9-in-1 Skin Perfecting Super Makeup in Medium
I will admit… I haven’t had this BB Cream for very long yet it has already had a good impression on me. It’s a bit thicker than other BB creams I have tried in the past but for me that’s just perfect because it provides better coverage for me while still feeling super light once it’s blended in. The shade Medium is also a great colour match for me. I will continue to use this one, for sure. Though, I think they have since changed what the packaging looks like since I purchased this one. I really hope the formulation is still the same!
Blush: Laura Geller Baked Blush N Brighten in Tropic Hues, Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Exposed
Both blushes are great. The Laura Geller blush in Tropic Hues is a great colour for me! It gives me a nice flush and it is buildable if you want more colour. The Tarte blush in Exposed is a lot more subtle but it’s great. I’m happy with both of these so they are both going back into my makeup drawer.
Setting Powder: elf Perfect Finish HD Powder
Love this! This is a great setting powder if you don’t want to splurge on similar ones like the one from Make Up For Ever. The only downside to this is it crumbles easy… if that makes sense. This was brand new when I started using it in the beginning of March and I have since hit pan because it crumbled easily. It’s a good thing it’s affordable! I don’t think this will last me as long as my MUFE one did… but I think it’s still worth using. I really like this.
Eye Primer: Elizabeth Mott Thank Me Later Eye Shadow Primer
This is a pretty good primer. It was easy to apply and it kept my eye makeup in place which is what you look for in an eye primer, essentially. While the tube is small, I find that you don’t need to put a lot on so this should still last me awhile. I will definitely continue to use this product.
Brow: Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil in Shade 4
Besides my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, this is my favourite brow pencil! This has a thicker tip than the Brow Wiz but it works so great. I find it very effortless to use and Shade 4 is an excellent match for my brows. It also acts as a was somewhat and keeps my brows in place. This is definitely a new holy grail item for me and I will not hesitate to repurchase this one again.
Brow Setting Gel: Milani Brow Shaping Clear Wax Pencil
This is probably the best brow setting pencil I have tried and I believe that it’s a great drugstore alternative to the ABH one. It does an excellent job of making my brows stay put without looking all waxy. For a couple of bucks, how could you go wrong? The downside to this is that my Superstore no longer has this and my Rexall doesn’t have Milani yet. I am hoping I find this locally again otherwise I will have to remember to get one next time I go to the US!
Mascara Primer: Wet n Wild PhotoFocus Lash Primer (not pictured because I forgot about it)
Still really liking this lash primer. It does make my lashes look thicker and does help with volume and length. I am going to continue using it and I already have a backup of this product in my stash! I love how this is so much more affordable than other higher end options.
Mascara: Benefit Roller Lash Deluxe Mascara
This is still one of my favourite mascaras of all time! It does make my lashes look great and works even better when it’s paired with the Wet n Wild primer. I will definitely continue to use Roller Lash!
Highlighter: Anastasia Beverly Hills Gleam Glow Kit, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Spotlight in Opal
Both the ABH Glow Kit and Becca highlighters are keepers! I’m actually hesitant to use my ABH one all the time because I don’t know what I will do if I ever run out of one of the pans! They provide just enough shimmer on my skin and they are both easily buildable because they are both very pigmented. They look natural on my skin and not over the top at all. I am a huge fan of these two highlighters – they definitely don’t disappoint!
Setting Spray: L’Oreal Infallable Pro-Spray Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray
Another pleasant surprise! I am usually pretty leery of setting sprays from the drugstore because it’s still a relatively new thing when it comes to drugstore brands. I have had this setting spray for awhile now and it is pretty up there in terms of my favourites. It has a nice mist which doesn’t drench your face (lol) and it really does a good job keeping my makeup looking great all day. This is my fave drugstore setting spray for sure and I will continue to use it.
Eye shadow (palette or singles): Too Faced Everything Nice Holiday Palette, Smashbox Full Exposure Palette
These are two palettes that I won’t be able to let go of. The Too Faced one has such great colours in it! I am in love with the shade Girly. Plus the Inner Light highlighter and Papa Don’t Peach blush is amazing. So great. Then the Smashbox palette is a great neutral palette whether you are looking for shimmers or mattes or both! This one has an excellent mix. Overall, I can’t let go of these two so they are both keepers!
These were the disappointments this month. Which is really sad because I have had both of these in my collection for awhile now and I thought they were working well or me. After using it more, I now know I’m really wrong! Well, at least about one of them. The other one? Irreconcilable differences, I’m afraid.
Foundation / BB Cream: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation in Medium Tan Sand
This… did not work out. At all. As little or as much as I put on, it was the same result. My face looked patchy and dry and you could definitely see that I was wearing a cakey foundation. The shade Medium Tan Sand worked well with my skin tone but I just couldn’t get past it looking cakey. Even when I put on just a wee bit. So I am going to pass on this one. That pains me to say it because I love tarte as a brand so, so much!
Concealer: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer Concealer in Medium
Honestly, this concealer is amazing. The shade Medium works so well for me! It does an amazing job covering my blemishes and other spots that need concealer so I was really happy with it. What I wasn’t happy with was the scent of this product. It has a very heavy chemical smell and I just couldn’t get past that. How odd considering my Tarte Shape Tape doesn’t have a strong scent at all! Different formulations and ingredients, I guess. This one makes me sad. Great product, awful smell. 🙁 I did use over half of it before deciding to part ways with it, though, so it wasn’t a complete loss.
So disappointing. Please keep in mind that this was my own personal experience with these products and that others may have success with them and adore them!
And finis! That is a breakdown of my March basket. I hope you found some of these mini reviews handy! Also thanks for sticking with me to the end. I know these recaps tend to be long but I am hoping it’s worthwhile for both of us.
I am super happy with the number of empties I ended up with but super sad about the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea items. I really, really wanted to love them. But I guess this is why I’m doing this, hey? To see what I like and what I don’t? Among using up my collection, of course.
Anyways, I hope you are all having a great start to the week! More blog posts in the coming days so please check back soon! 🙂
