Shop My Stash Recap: July 2017

shop my stash recap july 2017

Wow, July sure went by in a flash! I’m truly amazed at how quickly summer is going by yet sad because I don’t want it to end! Don’t get me wrong, I do love fall but I’m not quite ready for summer to be over just yet.

I had a pretty great Shop My Stash basket in July. I used everything pretty much every singld day this month! Plus I did not make any makeup purchases this month! I was super dedicated to using what I already have and not getting anything new other than what came in my subscription boxes.

There’s quite a bit to go through today so let’s get started!

For those of you who are new to this series, every month in 2017. I will be selecting (or ‘shopping’) different items from my makeup collection (aka the ‘Stash’) in an attempt to rediscover and use up what I already own instead of going to the store or shopping online. When your collection gets out of hand, you tend to forget what you already have.

If you want to read up more about this series, please see my introductory post. It contains a pretty thorough explanation as to what this is all about. ?  Also you can check out all my other Shop My Stash posts here.

I break down my recap posts into three parts: empties, keepers and rejects. Starting in May and June, I have also added a new category called “retired” which I will explain in that section. I think having this new category is a very good thing! Under each category, there is a quick write up about each product to express my thoughts about each one. I like to start off with success so lets look at the empties first. Quick wins! 🙂

The Empties

As usual, we are going to look at the empties first. There’s three of them. I consider it a successful month anytime I get empties! There was almost four but the NARS Tinted Moisturizer still has some product in it left.

Face primer: Benefit That Gal Brightening Face Primer
Pretty good! This is the first time I have ever used a primer that also illuminates your skin. I really liked the formulation of this one. It was super light on my skin and wasn’t sticky at all. My makeup also stayed put. Overall, I really like this primer. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase it again!

Brow: ColourPop Brow Pencil in Black N’ Brown
I used up another ColourPop Brow Pencil! This one is a darker shade that Bangin’ Brunette but it still worked for me…. it just made my brows look a lot more dramatic! I like this pencil… and I especially liked how it didn’t break as often as Bangin’ Brunette did! That just goes to show that it was a flawed brow pencil and not representative of the entire ColourPop brow pencil line so that’s a good thing. I do think I prefer Bangin’ Brunette, though… I would purchase that one over Black N’ Brown.

Mascara: Benefit Roller Lash
I used to LOVE this mascara! Now I think I just like it… recently, I found a couple of other mascaras that I like more. Still, this keeps the curl and does volumize my lashes. I’d use it again… and I’m going to have to since I still have a couple of these lying around in my collection! Not complaining, though. It’s a good mascara. 🙂

The Keepers

The largest section of these recap posts, as usual, is the Keepers section. These are the items I like enough to keep and continue using. 🙂

Concealer: Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer in Medium
While I do love my tarte Shape Tape, I also love this one…. but for different reasons. For days when I don’t have such dark circles or I just need light to medium coverage, I reach for this one. It’s a lot thinner consistency but still offers buildable coverage. This is also available at Sephora so I don’t need to order from tarte to get it. This is one of my fave concealers that I wouldn’t hesitate to buy again!

Foundation / BB Cream: NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer in St. Moritz, Milani Conceal + Perfect 2-in-1 Foundation + Concealer in 07 Sand, IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+SPF 50 in Tan
Okay, I knew that I liked the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer but I didn’t realize just how much I loved it until this month! I reached for this one the most in July. I’m going to say about 90% of the time, I wore this. It’s just so perfect for summer and July was a pretty warm month here with many days that felt humid, too. All I wanted was light coverage on these days. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the IT Cosmetics and Milani ones (in that order) but they were too thick for this month even though they are darker shades that work with my skin tone right now. Still keeping those for future use!

Blush: NARS Orgasm and tarte cosmetics Amazonian Clay Blush in Entertain
The NARS has shimmer while the tarte was matte. I love them both, though! The NARS is very pigmented so I just made sure to use a light hand with that one… otherwise, I would be very shimmery for work! The tarte was more subtle and natural. I will continue to use both!

Highlighter: tarte Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette
This was a lovely highlighter palette! I used Sunlight and Moonlight (the two larger of the pans) the most. Excellent pigmentation and Moonlight kinda falls uder the same shade family as Becca’s Opal shade so I probably used that one the most. I was disappointed in Filtered Light (the smaller shade in the middle), though. It wasn’t pigmented at all! Two out of three is still better than none, though!

Setting powder: elf Perfect Finish HD Powder
I’m starting to get into the duplicates in this category so I think I will be retiring this one in October after I try out the Bare Minerals one I received in July’s Boxycharm in September. As you know, I really like the elf pressed setting powder! Seeing so much pan proves that point. This is a great product and it’s reasonably priced, too. I got this last time I went to Vegas but I’ve seen it a lot locally, too. Superstore, Walmart, London Drugs and Rexall all carry this now. I will definitely be repurchasing this!

Eye primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer
I really need to start using some of my forgotten eye primers… this is a duplicate, again. So you already know this is a holy grail for me. If you follow my blog, you’d know this already! So we’ll just say it’s great and I love it and let’s move on.

Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, Urban Decay Naked 3 Double-Ended Eyeliner in Darkside and Blackheart
KVD is holy grail. That is a no brainer. It’s like the Too Faced eye primer. I love it and have repurchased it again and again. That’s all that needs to be said. The Urban Decay duo eyeliner is nice, too. I love these two colours. Darkside is a warm plum with a satin finish and Blackheart is a cool burgundy with a glitter finish. The formulation is nice. it glides right on. This one’s a keeper.

Mascara: tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes
I hope this never runs out! I’ve been using this one since April and I love it! It really lengthens and volumizes my lashes. It doesn’t smudge on me either (like the Too Face Better Than Sex one… oh my, raccoon eyes!). I will be using this until it’s done… or until the six month mark when it’s due for replacement. I would repurchase this in a heartbeat!

Eye shadow (palette or singles): ColourPop Super Shock Shadows
When I first started this endeavor, I said “For the month of July, I will focus on all my ColourPop. I have so many that I have neglected for too long!”. So I used mostly ColourPop in the month of July and it was SO good! I forgot how amazing these formulas are and just how pigmented and great they look! I will definitely have to use these more, for sure! Here are swatches of a few of my favourite ones.

Second Row: Mixed Tape, Catnip
Third Row: Tinsel, Mooning

The Rejects

None this month. I didn’t have anything in my basket that I absolutely couldn’t use or hated. That’s good, I guess? 🙂

The Retired

I’ve made it! When it comes to this category, at least. 😉

Setting Spray: Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray
Another duplicate. This category is going to go into a loop right away and I don’t want to clutter this post with the same thing each month. I love this setting spray so it’s definitely going into that rotation.

And that’s it my friends! Another month of Shop My Stash in the books. I’m still working through my collection but at least now that I’ve completed seven months of this, I’m feeling a lot better about it. I’m discovering what I love and what I don’t. That was the whole point when I started this.

While summer is still busy, I’m going to try and not fall behind on my next Shop My Stash posts. Look out for my August recap and the intro to my September basket posts on the week of September 3rd!

Until next time! How are you doing on your makeup challenges? 🙂

Shop My Stash: August 2017

shop my stash august 2017

Wow! It’s pretty much mid-August now! Where has the summer gone???

Before I post my recap from July later this week, here is my August Shop My Stash basket. Just for the record, while this post is coming a bit late, I have been using the products in this basket since August 1st. 🙂

What is a Shop My Stash?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Every month, I will be going into my makeup collection and – you guessed it – I will shop my stash. ? Just think of it as a haul post but instead of makeup I bought at Sephora or at Shoppers Drug Mart, it’s a haul straight from my own collection! And I’m hoping that by doing this monthly, I won’t get bored of the products I chose like I did in last year’s Project Pan.

If you’re interested, you can find my other Shop My Stash posts here.

How Shop My Stash Works

Every month I will take one or two of these types of products and put them in a basket.

*Please note, at times, I will not have some items in my basket. The reason why is stated next to the category.

  • Face primer
  • Color correction (None, no need for color correction right now)
  • Concealer
  • Foundation / BB Cream
  • Blush
  • Highlighter
  • Bronzer (None, it’s summer and my skin is too dark for bronzer. We will revisit in fall/winter)
  • Setting powder
  • Pore reducer (Success! None, retired category. I only have one product left: Benefit POREfessional)
  • Eye primer
  • Eye shadow (palette or singles)
  • Eyeliner
  • Brow
  • Brow setting gel (Success! None, retired category. I only have one product left: MAC Brow Set in Clear)
  • Mascara primer (None, I don’t have one at the moment.)
  • Mascara
  • Setting Spray (Success! None, retired category. I only have three products left in rotation: MAC, Urban Decay and Maybelline setting sprays)

If you haven’t noticed, I did not include any lip products (lipstick, lipgloss, etc.) to my list. This is because they are already in rotation in my purse. I change them around a lot so I didn’t think they needed special attention like the rest of these products!

At the end of each month I will have to make a few decisions: keep the product, continue using it (for those holy grail products I must always use) or get rid of it. I’m hoping that by doing this I can help identify my loves and get rid of what I don’t want anymore. I hope that I can get my collection under control.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I am not going to be limited to only using what’s in my basket. If there’s something I want to use then by all means, I will! The basket is just there to help give me something to focus on that month.

Then at the end of the month, I will summarize my monthly basket (what I loved, what I didn’t love, etc.) and then I will pick out a new basket of products!

Without further adieu, here are the contents of August’s basket!

Shop My Stash for August 2017

As I go through my collection, there is less categories to concentrate on – which is great! Because it means that at the very least, those categories are under control… which is the goal of this exercise, no? Anyways, with Pore Reducers, Brow Setting Gels and Setting Sprays out of the way, here’s what I selected for August.

Unboxing + Review: ipsy June 2017 Volume Up

ipsy june 2017

While I wait for my July ipsy bag to arrive, let’s take a look at what was in my June bag!

June’s theme was Volume Up which is represented by an illustration of a smiling mouth sporting red lips. The description of the bag is

This loud and proud pouch is a not-so-subtle reminder to *always* speak your mind!

The design of this month’s bag, while cute, is not my favourite. Though I must say it is made with a nice material. Like all ipsy bags, it’s the perfect size to keep all the small stuff in your purse together and organized in your purse. I’m talking things such as lipsticks, lipbalms and whatever else you want to keep in it.

While the bag itself was only okay for me, the contents of my June bag proved to be more exciting!

The first item I received was the Beauty For Real I-LINE 24-7 Eyeliner in the shade Chocolate Fix ($14.00 USD). My first exposure to this brand was in my Spring 2017 FabFitFun box. I was quite pleased with the lip products I tried so I’m excited to try more from this brand. It is a gel eyeliner said to last all day long. That would be great! The shade Chocolate Fix is a dark chocolate brown that is matte. I really like brown eyeliners for a less dramatic daytime look. Looking forward to trying this one!

Next is the Skyn Iceland Glacial Face Wash with White Willow Bark ($4.00 USD, 20 ml). I have tried products from this brand before and I always enjoy them. This is a super mild foam cleanser that is great for all skin types. Glacial water and botanicals are supposed to help sooth, revitalize and detoxify your skin. This deluxe sample is coming at the perfect time for me! I’m slowly running out of face cleansers. Score!

I love lippies so I was happy to see this next item! The Vasanti Cosmetics Power Oils Lip Gloss in Super Mom ($6.76 CAN, 2 g) is fab! It’s not only a lip gloss but it’s also a lip treatment, too. It has healing and nourishing natural oils. This is a hydrating lip gloss in a pink nude shade that is perfect for all occasions! And you don’t have to be a mom to wear Super Mom. Do Cat Mom’s count? It really is great shade for all!

ipsy june 2017 vasanti

I also received theBalm Cosmetics INSTAIN Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush in the shade Pinstripe ($4.00 USD, 1 g). You know how I have a love-hate opinion of these samples… “love” because I think they are a great brand with great products and cute packaging so I’m always willing to try something new from them but “hate” because their samples are so darned small! Anyways, about this blush – this is a powder blush that is supposed to be super long lasting (hence the word “stain” in the name). Pinstripe is a nice deep rose colour. I like this shade a lot. I just wish it was larger!

ipsy june 2017 thebalm

ipsy june 2017 thebalm

And last but not least, I received the Doucce Maxlash Volumizer Mascara in Black ($9.77 USD, 6 ml). Of course I would receive a mascara when I’m currently sporting lash extensions and can’t use it! And the open mascaras I have are only for my bottom lashes right now so this one will have to wait. The Doucce mascara seems to have good reviews so I will have to try it when I’m back to just natural lashes again. I mean, who can say no to volumizing mascara?

ipsy june 2017 doucce

That’s all for June! I thought it was a decent bag. Valued at $46.94 CAD (based on today’s exchange rate), it’s not a bad haul.. especially since I will use everything here! Not too shabby at all!

Shop My Stash Recap: May and June 2017

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Wow, it’s already July! The Shop My Stash series has officially reached the six month mark and I’m still going strong! I’m cycling through more of my makeup than I ever have before and I’m finding that this is helping me curb my spending. I haven’t bought a whole lot since I started this endeavour!

Which leads me to this question: I have been getting a few questions from readers asking me for tips on what helps you stay on track when you are on a no-buy or a low-buy (which is what I am following, more or less). Is there any interest in a blog post with tips and ideas that might help others who are trying to stay on track for their no-buy, low buy, project pans or shop my stash attempts? Let me know! 🙂

Anyways, let’s get started as there is a lot to cover!

Quick wins! 🙂

The Empties

During the last recap, it felt like the empties were going to be few and far between… because, honestly, how much can you use up in one month??? So when I ended up with three empties this time around, I was ecstatic! Am I the only one who gets excited when you hit pan or realize you have an empty? I think it’s exciting! (Plus it means one less product in the collection – huzzah!) Let’s take a look at the empties this go-round.

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Face Primer: CoverFX Anti-Aging Primer
This primer goes on smooth and is not at all sticky. I really like this primer! Which is a good thing because you’ll probably see this one here again in a few months… I have a full sized tube! 😮 I have used up another deluxe sized sample before this one so I knew what I was getting into so that’s okay.

Brow: ColourPop Brow Pencil in Bangin’ Brunette
I had a love-hate relationship with this brow pencil. On one hand, Bangin’ Brunette is the perfect shade for m brows so that they look natural and I really like the formulation and staying power of this pencil. On the other hand, I was not a big fan of it always breaking on me! To be fair, I have another shade of this product and that one doesn’t seem to have this issue so I’m just gonna chalk this one up to having a faulty product. Oh well. I must have liked it, though, seeing as I used it until it was done!. I would repurchase this as long as it doesn’t keep breaking.

Eye Primer:  Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer
This isn’t empty but I’ve been using it since November so it’s time to let it go. This was a pretty great product for this price point but I think I will stick to my fave Dior product when it comes to lash primers.

The Keepers

This is the largest grouping of products. These are the ones that I like enough or love enough to keep and continue using. 🙂

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Concealer: tarte Shape Tape in Medium
Amazing coverage! But it’s also a little bit on the thicker side when it comes to consistency. That being said, I still love it! The shade Medium is a perfect match for my skin tone. This concealer provides great coverage and blends so easily. Love this.

Foundation / BB Cream: Chanel Vitalumiere Satin Smoothing Fluid Makeup SPF 15 in 30 Cendre – Shell
Probably my only super high end foundation. I like this one a lot! It is a great shade match and super easy to blend. It also feels very lightweight and pretty moisturizing. I also liek that it contains SPF too. I won’t be wasting this one… I like it too much!

Foundation / BB Cream: L’Oreal Infallable Pro-Matte Foundation in 105 Natural Beige
Not pictured here because… well, I can’t seem to find it. I know that I took it on a few camping trips in the last month and I know I have seen it around but I seem to have misplaced it. Either way, it is one of my fave drugstore foundations! It has great coverage that builds and it does what it advertises and gives me a matte finish. I’ve used more than half of this already… now if only I could find it!

Blush: Benefit Sugarbomb Shimmer Blush
I will admit, I forgot I owned this. I’m so glad I rediscovered it! It really is such a great blush! There are four colours that you can use individually or blend together with a swirl of your blush brush. I usually just swirl them all and then apply it to the apples of my cheeks. This is a keeper for sure!

Highlighter: NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Gleam
I love this highlighter but it sure can be messy! The tube keeps squeezing more and more highlighter out of it without me even touching it so it can get quite excessive. All I can say is that it’s a good thing that this is a great highlight shade because otherwise I would have tossed it! Not a fan of the packaging at all!

Setting Powder: CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Matte Finishing Powder in Light to Medium
Still loving this powder. It just sets everything. And it is also tinted and provides me with a bit of colour. There isn’t anything bad I can think of about this product… except maybe the mirror int he compact. It’s really small. But that can be forgiven because the product is fab.

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper
Holy grail. Enough said. But in all honesty, I love this eyeliner to bits! I’m sure this is the third pen I’m on now. Sadly it’s getting pretty close to becoming another empty. I just love how precise this is and doesn’t drag on my lashline. It’s just so good.

Eyeliner: essence Eyeliner Pen Extra Longlasting
I’m really liking this liquid eyeliner, as well! This is a great drugstore option. The tip of this liquid eyeliner is precise and I find that it’s a long lasting formula. I will keep this one around for when my KVD one runs out!

Eye Primer:  Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer
Another favourite of mine. This is a great eye primer in that my eyeshadow stays put ALL day long. It’s easy to apply with your finger and absorbs quickly so you don’t have to wait to apply your eyeshadow. Just a great product all around!

Mascara: Benefit Roller Lash, tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes
I’m just going to group these two together because I am going to say the same thing about both of them. I’m a huge fan of both the Roller Lash and the Lights, Camera, Flashes mascaras! They both make my lashes look longer, keeps the curl and just overall looking great. This is why I haven’t tossed them out yet after using them for months now! I’m usually not very shy to throw out a deluxe sample if it’s horrible so that’s a good thing.

Setting Spray: MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Spray
Love this setting spray. It’s so light and smells nice. And most importantly, it keeps my makeup on my face. 😉 It’s also very refreshing to use throughout the day. Good stuff!

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Eye shadow (palette or singles): Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist’s Palette
I had an awful first impression of this palette when I first got it. I got it because I love purples so this was the perfect palette for me! But when I first used it, I didn’t find it as pigmented as I would have liked… so I set it aside and didn’t use it for awhile. Giving it another chance this past month, I don’t know what was going on back then because the pigmentation is great now! And I love the many shades of purple in that palette. I used it a lot last month and I will be using it a lot in the future, too.

The Rejects

I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not but I only have one item for this category and quite honestly, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to include it here under The Rejects or put in in with The Empties. Anyways, here goes. Please don’t hate me!

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Eye Shadow (Palette or Singles): Urban Decay Naked 2
This was one of my very first palettes I ever purchased for myself. I loved it. Absolutely adored it. But now that it’s old, I think it’s dried up. It’s not as pigmented as it used to be when I use a brush (it’s still very pigmented if I use my fingers) and quite honestly, I have most (if not all) of these shades  (or similar shades) in other palettes that I own. I also noticed that I never reach for this palette anymore… I reach for other palettes instead. So because of those reasons, I think it’s time to part with this. Sad to say but goodbye Naked 2. You were lovely while you lasted! No, I will not be repurchasing this due to the reason stated above of my other similar nude shade palettes.

The Retired

As you may have noticed, I started having items mentioned each and every month. I don’t want to continue cluttering my recap posts by having to write about these same items over and over so I started a new classification: The Retired. These are the last of their kind in my collection. These are the products that I will continue to use month after month so the product in this category will never change. To be perfectly honest, I want all the product categories to get to this point but I know that it’s not realistic. Anyways, so far, we have two retired categories.

shop my stash recap may june 2017

Pore Reducer: Benefit POREfessional
While I have many deluxe sided samples of this product, this is the only pore reducer I have in my collection. If you have been following me for awhile now, you know this is my holy grail pore product in my makeup arsenal! I consider this as a Holy Grail product and I will continue to use this product and finish up all the samples that I have.

Brow Gel: MAC Brow Set in Clear
Another Holy Grail product of mine… and the only brow gel that I currently own. This does a fab job keeping my brows staying put! I will finish this and either keep buying it or I will buy another product… but only one product at a time… so I won’t have to include it in my Shop My Stash endeavours. Yes, I have learned through this process and I will try my best not to hoard products anymore.

And that, my friends, is it for my May and June Shop My Stash recap! I hope you enjoyed that.  I’m six months into Shop My Stash right now and I’m really enjoying it. I’m also finding all sorts of positive things coming out of it that it makes me want to continue doing it.

Are you currently working on a Shop My Stash or Project Pan? How are you doing at the mid-year mark?

Shop My Stash for July 2017

Now that we are well into summer, I have decided to put together a basket of products that caters to summer, the sun and hot weather. That’s right – hot weather! Despite popular belief, we do get pretty warm summer weather in Edmonton as proven by the temperatures being around the 30s this week! Yes, we have Heat Warnings issued. It’s hot. So my basket contains items that are light and bright and works well on my tanned skin. I used sunscreen throughout my holidays yet I still tanned! Let’s just say most of my foundations are too light for me right now…

Anyways, without further adieu, let’s take a peek at what’s in my July basket!

That’s it for July! It’s a smaller basket, yes, but I want to try and get more empties out of my collection! Stay tuned for my Shop My Stash Recap from May and June coming soon!

I hope you’re all still enjoying this series. Let me know if you’re doing a Shop My Stash or Project Pan, too! I’d love to hear about your progress. 🙂
